Does your credit score have to be amazing to be approved for a mortgage? how does it work if your credit score is average. Will you be rejected for one?

So the actual number is a bit irrelevant- it’s just there to give you an indication of how you’re doing, lenders will look at your credit history, not the number. What they’re looking for is that you can safely handle credit and pay things back on time- so no missed or late payments, not using too much credit (overdrafts or credit cards) etc. Things that make you look relatively stable can also help e.g. having had a bank account for a long time.

If you do have difficulties on your credit history there are mortgage brokers who will specialise in finding mortgages for people with “adverse credit” but the rates will be worse.
