Help! I've been sent a letter saying I'm being charged £100 due to failure to submit a tax return - I'm PAYE (teacher). I did a tax return last year because I needed to pay back child benefit once my salary went over x amount but I have a letter confirming I have zero left and haven't received any child benefit since. Do I just ring HMRC and clear it up?

Do you not need to opt back out of self assessment if you have registered on the past? You can't just stop doing them without any notification

If you filed last years SA return online, you can just go on and file it with your P60 details from your employment. Once the returns are issued you have to complete them.
You will then need to appeal against the fine and also let them know that you don't require a return for future years.
All the guidance is on Gov.uk.

Yes you need to opt out , I’ve been trying to do this myself and it keeps failing for some reason so I have appealed the fine - the irony is I actually work full time for HMRC and have done for three years

Just call them, they are actually really very helpful.

FlowerArranger · 24/03/2022 01:06

They are indeed - mostly - helpful. However it's usually not a matter of just calling them. Unless you call at 8 am... Any other time and you'll
likely be on hold for a very long time.

Ring them up, if you only have PAYE, no self employment, no directorships & don't need to pay back child benefit this year they can change the marker on your record to remove the self assessment & cancel the penalty.
