Incorrectly applied for marriage allowance

I work part time for a small company and I believed that I would be eligible for marriage allowance this year. My final payslip has put me just over the amount that would make me eligible (our accountant messed up on my gross pay to date, which in turn messed up my calculations).
Will they just look at it and say no, or will I be in trouble for applying when I am not eligible? Do I need to phone and tell them?

I did this recently. They sent a cheque to my husband and then recalculated my tax so I now owe the amount of tax allowance they transfered to him. My tax code has been changed so I pay it back over the next tax year but I'm just going to pay it back straight away.

They must not check it.

Mumheadflop thank you so much for answering. So, as my DH and I put all of our income into one pot, it actually won't make any difference to us in the long run? (And I won't get into trouble to applying when I'm not actually eligible?!).

I'm not an expert but yes I think it will all just even itself out if you don't mind paying slightly more tax over the year. I think it will be about £20 extra a month.

They sent me a letter at the same time they sent my husband the cheque saying I owe £250 and that they'd be adjusting my tax code. It must all be automated i think!
