Who is exempt from council tax? Someone with under 6 year old are they exempt from paying?

I'm slightly confused over this, if someone has a under 6 year old do they not need to pay council tax, or is it only if they are a carer for their child? thanks

Anyone over 18 is eligible to pay.

Certain benefits might entitle you to a reduction or waiver.

If its just an adult (who is not a student) and a child then they are eligible for a 25% discount but still eligible to pay some

titchy · 10/03/2022 16:18

The only exemption for adults is if they are a full time student. You may be eligible for council tax benefit which would reduce the amount you pay depending on circumstances though but you'd have to apply.

If they have a low income they may be eligible for council tax benefit which reduces their bill.

Also people with certain conditions like dementia don’t have to pay.

nearlyspringyay · 10/03/2022 16:19

There's no exemption for a parent of an under 6 yo

rattlemehearties · 10/03/2022 16:20

Single adult households get a discount. Nothing to do with children.

mumznet · 10/03/2022 16:30

It is a bit strange, so I am working, but 2 years ago there was a large discount on the bill. I thought it was due to having an under 6 year old, so the baby was 2 ish. I was working at that time too, however it was part time. now its full time so have to pay in full. so is there nothing about having an under 6 year old? maybe this is only for single households?>

There is nothing about having an under 6 year old.

More likely that you got council tax benefit based on your low income if you were part time.

DoucheCanoe · 10/03/2022 16:35

25% discount if you are/were a single adult household.

You might have been receiving benefits top ups if you were part time that led to a reduction?

Comefromaway · 10/03/2022 16:38

Also Currently for universal credit if you have a child under school age you are not expected to have to work as many hours before being eligible for benefits than you are if you have a child over school age.

I don’t know how things worked 6 years ago but likely something similar.

mumznet · 10/03/2022 16:57

oh I see it may have been income. thanks. however, I think I was also full time and then still had to pay nothing, so I may go back to take a look a my previous statements.
