Hi

My ds is selling his bike (he’s away at Uni). He’s had a long and rambling response to his add where the buyer can only pay by PayPal and will arrange a ‘mover’ to collect the bike after the payment has gone through.

The response reads as though English is not their first language, which is obviously fine but it is so long amd detailed about how they can’t take calls at work and their internet is not good but they can use a wireless laptop!

So, what’s the risk of him setting up a PayPal account to receive this money? Is there any? Just smells a bit ‘scammy’ to me (and him too cos he’s asking for advice).

Thanks.

Definitely a scam.

If they pay via PayPal they can claim the item was never collected/received and get a refund as PayPal usually sides with the buyer.

Thanks.
I suspected as much.
Do you know what the scam is? Presumably they’ll create a dispute of some kind but still take his bike?

Never accept PayPal if an item is collected. You'll lose your money.

They do a claim on PayPal and PayPal will refund.

100% scam. Tell him to block the person

Thanks all.
He was clearly alerted to it seeming odd and thankfully asked our advice.

It’s good to know he was right to check.

Best to do cash on collection only for such an item.
