They’re charging me too much tax, I’m on the incorrect tax code and need to contact them. However, I can’t set up a personal tax account as have no up to date passport, and have been on hold on the phone for over 30 minutes. Any help gratefully received.

Wait times are really bad as it's self assessment peak.
Best staying on hold (even though very boring) and sometimes the advisor can sort it out over the phone.

Meceme · 27/01/2022 14:54

Stay on the phone. It can take a long time but when you get through to an advisor they are really efficient and helpful.

Danikm151 · 27/01/2022 14:59

I used to call about 15 before the lines closed, usually picked up within 5 minutes as most people will call first thing in the morning or during lunch time.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 27/01/2022 15:01

Self assessment deadline is Monday so will be crazy until then. If you can hold off another week it will be much quicker.

MaizeAmaze · 27/01/2022 15:04

I'd ring them in February when you have a spare hour or so to sit on hold.
As others have said, no point calling this week, as it's self assessment deadline.

ClawedButler · 27/01/2022 15:05

Yes I've found them an absolute nightmare to get hold of, BUT when you get through they've been very knowledgable and helpful.

Wotrewelookinat · 27/01/2022 16:19

Thank you for your help everyone, didn’t realise it was self-assessment time so that makes sense.

Call first thing in the morning 8-8.30 (can't remember exactly when they open) . Answered after 5 min. Friday evening I waited for 1.5 hrs !! Then I had to hang up as I was going out. Googled and lots of advice to call early morning. Good luck !!

There’s a section on line where you can let them know your estimated earnings for the year. I use it annually for DH so we don’t get a large bill when hes done his self assessment. They respond really quickly with a new tax code. You do have to be registered though first.

WutheringHeights66 · 28/01/2022 06:39

So sorry, just read the F thread again and you can’t do that. Ignore me.

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 28/01/2022 16:24

I found either ringing 10 minutes before closing time or the old fashioned writing a letter worked.

crackofdoom · 28/01/2022 16:26

I fling a melon in their general direction from a trebuchet. There’s just enough room on the average cantaloupe to chalk your UTR and a few choice insults.
