I have so had enough of IR!!! I posted a while ago saying IR wanted alot of money from me saying id been overpaid! Wasnt claiming at time so they wanted the money off me str8 away! well after your advise i claimed and got a letter saying we are entitled to £932 for the year which is great! they then took all this money and used it to pay my debt with them which was fine, well just had a phone call from tax credit saying they now are aware that we were overpaid by £2500 lats year because of a computer error on their behalf, they apparently ahd my DH down as working 39 hours plus but with an income of £0 which is obviously wrong! Have been told we wont need to pay the money back BUT will have to appeal to get this years claim money!!!! They are not sure how long claim will take or when we will get our money back!!!!! Am so annoyed at them and they want me to wirte a long letter stating my problem even though they are the ones who noticed the error!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ARE IR HOPELESS!!!!!!!!

I'd be fuming!!

Their error, their problem - I'd refuse!

OTOH, tricky because you want this years money!

ARGHG!!!

IR and the whole tax credit issue is crap. They said they overpaid us by a couple of thousand because dp was self employed and made a loss on the business - so they tell you on the form to put '£0' Friends if our were 'overpaid' £4000 because when there were hundreds of cases where they typed in peoples incomes as £20,000 per year and it went into the systems as £2000 a year. How bloody crap are they???????

bonkerz · 17/11/2004 12:57

thing is i rang the helpline to ask how to contact the TAX CREDIT people and not IR and they said that i can only write to them!!! When asked why i couldnt phone them she said they dont have phones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! too scared of the backlash more like it!!!!

bonkerz, we have all been there, i have posted about tax credits in the past, so won't put it here again but yes they are hopeless and also happy for us mere mortals to deal with the stress caused by their shortcomings. I complained to my MP who basically wrote back and said he thought the system was fine and ha heard no complaints before!!!

Good luck with the appeal
Zephycat- you should def appeal too, it is their fault and mistake, you weren't to know and should not have to pay it all back.

yingers74 · 17/11/2004 12:59

Liars - they have phones, i have spoken to both the helpline and to the office who sent me the letter that told me I had to appeal and have been overpaid.

bonkerz · 17/11/2004 13:01

do you have a number for the tax credit office then?

OP posts:
yingers74 · 17/11/2004 13:12

the number on my 'overpaid' letter is 0151 949 3083 although i notice on a subsequent letter they have put the general helpline number on it!
Good luck

bonkerz · 17/11/2004 13:59

We've also been overpaid - had also my DH down as working 39 hours but earning £0. had two letters from them stating that we've been overpaid by over £6000 - yeah right!! and another saying that we owe £231. We have spent over 18 months telling them that they should not be paying us this money and they repeatedly insisted that it was ours, so after the first 10 months - we spent it. Now they're keeping what we shold be entitled to this year to pay back what we are supposed to owe them. Rang them to ask if we owe £6000 or £231 - they don't know!!!!

bonkerz · 17/11/2004 20:40

sally strawberry: if you can claim and are entitled to then i would! i was in your position where IR told me i had been overpaid so i just thought sod ya and didnt claim as would have only got £12 month and they would have taken that in repayment BUT they sent me a letter demanding the money in full as i was no longer claiming! So i claimed and they have taken what i am entitled to to pay off debt which means i dont have to find any money! Its now they are saying the reason i owe is cos they had my dh down as earning nothing but working 39 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

joanneg · 17/11/2004 20:47

SAME HERE!!! They put my dh wages as 0 and overpaid us by £2500!! They are now paying dh £300 in his wages that we are not entitled to!! We keep phoning them, but they still havent sorted it out. Seems like their computer system is naff!!

bonkerz · 17/11/2004 20:54

crikey maybe we all need to write letters and send them in together! might get noticed! looks like we all got the same problem!!!!!

OP posts:
joanneg · 17/11/2004 20:59

trouble is everytime you ring up you speak to somebody different - explain - they are clueless then we always get told "head office will write to you!" It is frustrating isnt it?

Maybe we should all write. I have been ringing up - but writing might be better
