I've been scammed

I had a notification on my banking app asking me to authorise a transaction, at the same time I received a call from my banks fraud team saying there was suspicious activity on my account, he confirmed my name, address and DOB to me and didn't ask for any other details other than a security code.
I was in the middle of trying to get my children out of the car and stupidly gave him the code which of course has turned out to be an OTP code. I didn't read the message properly as I was flustered and in a rush. He then phoned back a short while later and asked me to go through security with a code again and again I gave him the code.

I realise I am so incredibly stupid, I've been crying about this all weekend at my stupidity.

The two transactions have amounted to 10k and have taken my savings. Everything I have. I have of course now reported it to my bank who have blocked everything, including my online banking and now I have to wait for an investigation to take place.

I fear I won't be refunded because I was so stupid.

My only hope is that I went on to the app and declined a payment as not being me, and I hardly ever use the account so why did they allow these big payments to go through? I know they had the OTP code but I had declined an identical transaction on my app... maybe I'm clutching at straws Sad

Has anyone done anything similar and got their money back?

No idea but how gutting. These people are utter scum Thanks

LessTime · 17/01/2022 15:48

Oh no, that's just awful. This happens to thousands of people so don't waste time beating yourself up for it. It's the scammers who are 100% to blame. They are clever and completely without any morals.

I don't know if you have any chance of getting your money back but you should definitely try!

LessTime · 17/01/2022 15:49

Which bank or building society was it?

languagelover96 · 17/01/2022 16:04

MLMsuperfan · 18/01/2022 22:16

Awful.

LetsGoParty · 19/01/2022 09:31

Any update?

LifesABotch · 19/01/2022 21:48

Don't know, but how awful, poor you Sad

mdh2020 · 19/01/2022 22:03

I know how awful you are feeling because I was scammed and, frankly, I felt as if my personal space had been invaded. Luckily, my bank did refund the money I had lost. I know people can be very smug and say they would never fall for a scam, but they catch you off guard and can be very plausible. I have read interviews with lawyers and MPs who have been scammed. I hope you manage to get your money back.

lightand · 19/01/2022 22:08

You are not stupid. It is very easy to get scammed.

I hope you get your money back. Please dont get upset about what you did. I repeat, you are not stupid.

What utter bastards. So sorry Op - I hope you get your money back but don't blame yourself or beat yourself up about it - you're the victim here and they're scum.

Cottagepieandpeas · 19/01/2022 22:16

So sorry OP it’s such a horrible feeling.
It happened to me about a year ago and I honestly thought I would never get taken in by something like that, but they were so convincing.

I was fortunate that I did manage to suss out something wasn’t right before they were able to get any money.

I was really upset for ages though. It really shook my confidence.

I hope you get your money back.

MountainAshley · 21/01/2022 09:33

@suchanidiot22 Did you get your bank problem sorted yet? I hope you will be getting your money back.

thingymaboob · 21/01/2022 09:36

So sorry, I hope you get your money back

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 21/01/2022 09:40
