Council tax

Hi,

My partner has moved to australia for 6 months with work. I'm thinking of seeing if I can reduce council tax through single person discount while he is away, but we are concerned that not being registered/on the electoral role might affect his credit score. Is this the case, and if it is, how significant will the drop be?

Many thanks!

The discount is 25% where I am. Not sure if it's universal.
Not being on the electoral roll will technically negatively impact his credit score but by how much will depend on all the other factors too.

Does he need UK credit whilst he's away?

I believe that if you're normally resident in the UK, you can remain on the electoral register while overseas.

And the discount is 25%, it's the same all over England (possibly UK-wide).

It’s a 25% discount on being the only adult over 18 living in the property.

Why not email and explain that they have moved to Australia for 6 months therefore you’re the only adult actually living in the property and when and if he returns you will notify them

Electoral registers are complied in November

So if your do registered last November and will return to register again this November - then he will remain on register

Thanks all for your replies. Really useful to know. I will contact the council tomorrow and take it from there. Smile
