Tax credits overpayment.

So I divorced my husband back in 2013. Prior to that, from 2009 to 2013 we were judicially separated. He never paid maintenance for his 4 kids. During our marriage we were getting tax credits and working tax credits. Then I became single and was getting my rent paid and unemployment benefit. This was all before universal credit. Then I started a part time job. Everything was kosher. Then the HMRC cocked up and billed me for overpayment. I'm still dealing with this. It's over £1000.

Now the ex has come round with a letter from them saying he owes nearly a grand. He's also saying he never got a payment from them as he lived with his late mother and just got other benefits as tax credits had stopped and UC credit taken over. He never applied for UC as his mum was in sheltered housing and the rent was paid. He is saying that I got the money in his name from the tax credits prior to our separation and divorce and kind of hinted that I'm responsible for paying them back?? The bill is in his name.
I'm already paying back what I owe. I told him to call the helpline and sort it out. I refuse to be part of helping him if he thinks I'm responsible for all this. What can I do? This has stressed me out.
Hope this made sense to you.

Direct him to your local CAB.

Thank you ladies. My bill was higher than his, I'm dreading to think his half has been put on me by mistake. I can't use the phone as I'm deaf and the text relay system is a joke.
