Carers Allowance Query

Hello. I receive carers allowance and work part time but unfortunately this job is coming to an end early next year. I have just been offered another part time job, where I will be working and paid for term time only. The weekly pay would be more than the threshold of £128 but I would only be paid 34 weeks a year so if worked out over the year I would be earning less than this threshold. Does anyone have any advice on whether this is something I would be able to do? It will obviously have a huge bearing on whether I am able to take the job or not. Thanks in advance.

I'd contact them and ask. Normally whenyou work in a school wages are spread across the year 12 monthly pays will this not be the case for you? Also any wages paid into your occupational pension aren't counted so just ask for everything over the threshold to be paid into your pension if you can afford it.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I thought it would be paid over 12 months as this has been the case when I've worked term time only before but sadly this is not the case with this job. I will contact them tomorrow to check.

The DWP will sometimes use the average of your pay. It's at the DWP's discretion whether they do this or not. Carers UK may be able to help with your enquiry.... email at: [email protected].

Because I get paid monthly, mine is assessed in my monthly pay. So I am over some weeks and under some weeks but if the month is under, I qualify. They won t average it over the full year.

I would ring them. They're very nice but you need to be sure.

I have helped clients with situations where earnings were variable and carers allowance have looked at eight week periods with the person sending in payslips. However I'm not sure that they actually based entitlement on an average, I think it was more that they looked at the eight week period and for any weeks where earnings were over £128 a week, the carers allowance stopped. You do need to be careful as people end up with big overpayments.
