Unintended cafe nero subscription

GOODCAT · 24/09/2021 09:45

I am really annoyed with myself. I logged onto my banking app this morning and it flagged that it had a new subscriptions section. I don't ever subscribe for anything but clicked anyway. To my annoyance it showed I was paying a subscription to Cafe Nero. I use their app and my card is linked to it.

I have never knowingly signed up for a subscription and pay for my coffee when I do use it.

While it is my own fault for not checking my bank statements I am really annoyed that I have managed to sign up for this without realising. If someone else said this I would have thought they must have forgotten or not paid attention, but I think I am careful and I definitely wouldn't have signed up for this knowingly.

I am just annoyed with myself now.

Didn't know cafe nero had a subscription Hmm what does it do?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 24/09/2021 09:52

The only subscription I can see for Café Nero (with an admittedly fast glance in a waiting room) is for coffee bean delivery to your house?

GOODCAT · 24/09/2021 10:42

I don't know what it does but I didn't subscribe for it, haven't had any benefit from it and definitely won't be going anywhere near their app again. I am just very annoyed at myself for getting caught like this.

This sounds like a scam… I’d be contacting the bank.

The only subscription Café Nero do is for deliveries of whole bean coffee to your house every few months. It doesn’t look like it’s been open for a while, and I can’t see how you’d sign up for it via the app. So unless anyone in your house gets coffee deliveries and has access to your card, this seems really suspect.

Contact your bank. Amazon is the absolute worst for trying to sign you up for their Prime but didn't realise other places were up to this scam too.

SylvanasWindrunner · 24/09/2021 11:31

Are you sure it's a subscription and not just a preapproved payment (card linked to the app) that's showing up in the wrong place? Have you actually been charged?

GOODCAT · 24/09/2021 11:32

Thanks for the advice to call the bank. I have just called but they have a high call volume so I have asked for a call back. Will see what they say.

Just read your post again - I would actually go and look at your statements. It wouldn't surprise me if it was just the fact you have a card linked to an app that you use occasionally that is flagging it as a subscription. Is there a monthly amount actually coming out of your account?

HSBC cancelled my card once because I used to get the same thing for breakfast every day before work Envy so that day I didn't get breakfast Sad

I had a look too. If you haven't actually bought anything using it then you shouldn't be charged. Seems its just a way to record your loyslty points. Have they actually taken money from your account.

GOODCAT · 24/09/2021 11:48

Spoke to my bank. They said it was linked to my long card number so not a direct debit and it wasn't coming out as a regular amount. It sounds as though it has been mis-named though the back doesn't think so.

They have however blocked my card from being used at Nero' s so that should stop me from shopping there altogether which is no bad thing. I would love a bank that could prevent me from spending on all my bad habits!
