Managing overdraft - blocking payments

Is it possible to ask your bank to not honour payments if you have gone over your arranged overdraft?

Currently I understand some banks will honour payments but will charge mega interest rates. I would like to change it so if I attempt to go over my arranged overdraft I simply won't be able to.

Any advice/tips very welcome..

What sort of payments do you mean?
Not all shops will contact your bank for debit card payments so its up to you to check you have enough funds before spending anything.

Sorry yes I mean shops. I understand from friends that they have an arrangement whereby the bank simply won't authorise payments if they go over their arranged overdraft. This is a joint account so I can't always be there to check ....

Do you not have an app for the bank that you can check?
Depends on the type of account as to whether it checks every transaction

Yes I have an app. It's a joint account though. So it's probable we don't have the right account. Thanks

The app should show a balance and available balance. The available balance takes into account some debit card transactions and will 'reserve' those funds so you cant spend then.

I think what you mean is the other person on the account is the one going over the limit? I'd suggest that person come off the account and have a basic bank account with no overdraft facility.

@tribpot - yest that's it. I wish it were as simple as you suggest.
