why woudl my tax code be too low?

student finance say it is,
impossible to speak to hmrc.
a web chat said i was self employed, but i am not! not for 8 years
are the tax department going to pieces?

Have you received a notice of coding ? This will explain why it's being restricted. Hmrc are upside down at the moment!

Do you have an online account on the giv site?

You can see your current tax code and there's usually an explanation.

So I can see my details and what impact my company car has, for example. I always go on there before calling.

Have you underpaid tax? They adjust your tax code to claw back tax that you owe.

You need to sign up for a personal tax account, you'll be able to view your coding notices. They are really useful.

If you've underpaid tax previously then yes, they are collecting it now.
