Have I done a silly thing?

A little while ago a chap came to the door. He was doing something for the RSPB which is a cause I've been thinking of for a while. Now he had on a RSPB jacket had loads of RSPB info etc. and a badge. Long story short. I filled out a direct debit form. What are the chances I've been fleeced? My card number isn't on it. Is there anything I can do in the meantime? Oh bugger.

Have you contacted the charity to see if they hold your records?

That would be my first thought. If they dont then obviously cancel the direct debit!!

anorak · 21/11/2007 16:14

it sounds genuine but there's no reason why you can't ring them and check as binkle suggests. It will put your mind at rest.

karen999 · 21/11/2007 16:16

Sounds like it should be ok, but I agree with the others - give them a call.

mistypeaks · 21/11/2007 16:16

when I say a little while I mean an hour!! I don't think they'll have them yet!! Maybe phone them and see if they are currently running a door to door campaign.
Thanks for the replies, just wondering if there are any sure fire supsicious things rip off merchants do?

Has he left you a copy of the form and some RSPB literature?

Kewcumber · 21/11/2007 16:21

contact your bank and say you have filled in a direct debit for RSPB but on reflection you are worried that the man may not have been from the RSPB - they should volunteer to check any new direct debits for you

mistypeaks · 21/11/2007 16:23

Yes I have copy, and literature. Just went on website and the online literature and phone numbers were all the same which was a good sign. Have called membership, it is all kosher. Thanks for all your speedy replies, I know I prob could have worked out 'phone' them for myself, but I just suddenly panicked and needed a bit of moral support!!!! (I've turned into such a dithery wuss lately)

Nothing made me suspicious at the time and my instincts are usually fairly good. I was just reading on here about the whole big information database scandal and panicked. I know its unrelated and I'm being paranoid. But I'm ok now i've checked it out.
