yes, i would cancel your cards etc and get some new ones. if people have those details they can buy things over the net etc

mmjeozz · 15/11/2007 13:20

no id ont think so as it is on every cheque you write and give to people. but then im no expert so not sure

ruddynorah · 15/11/2007 13:22

no they can't do much with it. you need a card number, expiry date etc to pay on line on phone etc.

lailasmum · 15/11/2007 13:22

no not with just your account number and sort code. the only thing they could do is put money in your bank account. If they had your card numbers that is dangerous. YOur account number and sort codes are on every cheque you write.

OldenGoldie · 15/11/2007 13:22

I understand that these details o nly allow you to pay in, best to call your bank and check though!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 15/11/2007 13:25

They can pay you money.
That's it.
Your card PAN number, the long one across the middle, is required to pay for things along with the start & finish date and security number on the back, last 3 on sig. strip.

Kewcumber · 15/11/2007 13:25

no - as mmjeozz. Presumably you give people cheques quite happily which have all those detials and more.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 15/11/2007 13:26

Yes they could pay some money IN to your account!

Account numbers and sort codes are on every single cheque we write. You can't do anything with just those. (Except make a deposit!)

QueenofVenus · 15/11/2007 13:27

Cheques - of course! i never thought about account details being on there, i guess it must be ok then! Thankyou everyone, i was a little concerned! xx

QofV it can sometimes be a problem though, so keep an eye on any odd deposits to your account. (Do a search on Puddytats)

well someone has taken my account number and have my sort code and keep trying to set up a direct debit from my account, its for a fitness club(This has been happening for a few months)My bank said they cant block it, and i have to contact the place setting it up.Which i did and they had no records of my name .Tried to set it up again this month, i have now written to head offfice. Its just lucky i check the online bank every day, otherwise they couldve taken money out!

Kewcumber · 15/11/2007 19:57

the bank must be able to do something - the is a direct debit guarantee that all banks agree to honour

pinkystinky · 16/11/2007 06:08

They have told me if it was a standing order then yes they can block it. I was told because they are setting it up with my account nymber and details i must have authorised it!!( what the hell would i want a finess club membership for? I have 4 lil ones when do i get time, and where the hell would i get money to afford it?)
I have spoke to the bank 3/4 times now and get told the same, so have just applied for a different bank account, i cant afford for money to be taken from my account. And this is just a CASHCARD ACCOUNT!!See what the fitness club has to say.

Kewcumber · 16/11/2007 20:13

perhaps you would like to suggest to tem that you contact the financial ombudsman as they are indeed obliged to refund any money they incorrectly debit from your account www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/ombudsman-news/27/27-directdebit-guarantee.htm.
Exact situation about half way down.
