Can you help sister has rec a rent arrears letter for prop she moved out of 2 years ago

Can anybody offer any advice,

My sister moved out of a council property in October 2005 to go and live back with our mum and dad. I can remember writing the letter giving 4 weeks notice and remember that we had to phone the office to make sure they had received it which they did we made sure my sister had paid all of the rent owed etc on the day she moved out and we went and handed in the keys. Now 2 years later out of the blue we have a letter saying that she owes £192.00 as she never gave four weeks notice.

I dont have a copy of the letter as I did it when I was at work on a works computer.

What can we do? surely they cant come 2 years down the line saying we didnt give 4 week notice.

I know that we difinately did but it is just a case of our word against theres.

This might sound obvious, but have you phoned them and said "we've got this letter, there's obviously been a confusion somewhere because we did give notice so we'd be grateful if you'd check your files".

Sounds like someone is cleaning up a filing/billing system and it could just be that the letter has been misfiled. After all this time they may well just take your word for it.

If you've done this and they're being unhelpful about it I'd go to CAB.

yes have done it and spoke to a lady, not the one that wrote the letter she wasnt very helpful. The lady that wrote the letter is at there mobile office in our town today so I am going down there once my sister gets to my house.

I cant beleive they can do this after two whole years
