Ocado - worth it?

I have 2 boys, 8 and 11 and have been online shopping with Tesco since the beginning of the pandemic, weekly shop about £150, less when DH not at home! I'm thinking of switching to Ocado as I'm bored of the same stuff at Tesco but a few friends have told me it can get quite pricey/difficult to get slots and I like getting clubcard points, anyone made the switch and got any advice? I guess it depends where you are. I'm not particularly loyal to any supermarket, in person I use Aldi, online I use Ocado because certainly over the last year or so, they have more slots available than any of the other delivery supermarkets. eg I had a quick look yesterday and the earliest slot I could get was mid day today, plenty of availability for the coming week.

I don't think it's any more pricey than any of the others, again, depends what you're buying. I spend about £100/105 every 9 or 10 days with them, we are 2 adults and 3 kids aged 9-13, no pets. I might supplement that with some fruit and veg from the local market but I'm definitely not spending £150 a week even with random add on top ups.

I use all of them too, Ocado is definitely the most pricey.

I went from Sainsburys to Ocado and didn't notice a cost increase, but did notice less substitutions.
I will switch again if I see a decent offer for new customers anywhere.

I’ve been using Ocado for last 18 mths, I signed up for a mid week delivery pass, £1.50 per month, was expecting this to go up after initial 12 months but it hasn’t and this is what keeps me with there, don’t find them any more or less expensive than any other online shopping, bit miffed they cut ties with Waitrose and using M&S, but I tend to stick to the Ocado brand now anyway.

DarlingWithoutYou · 13/04/2021 15:29

I love the reliability of Ocado and their food, and also like M&S food too. We are a family of 3 and spend about £50 every weekend with them, and about £50 at Aldi.

Depends. I easily spend £100 extra at Ocado, but because there’s things that I can’t get at Tesco. Fancy ingredients etc all add up.

I can do a shop at around the same price, but I don’t see the point of shopping at Ocado if I can’t get some banging meals out of it.

CraftyGin · 13/04/2021 15:31

I'm about to cancel my membership given the move from Waitrose to M&S.

We tend to shop daily for food, but for bulk/heavy plan to move to Sainsbury's Click and Collect.

NativityDreaming · 13/04/2021 15:32

Doesn’t ocado price match to tesco? They send you a discount for your next shop if your shop would have been cheaper at Tesco.

User5747384 · 13/04/2021 15:38

I don't use ocado as much since my orders kept on coming really bashed up. Stuff broken boxes of stuff caved in.
One of the workers told me that where they had been getting more home deliveries that since humans have been packing the bags it was a mess, apparently it used to be a robot machine that did it.

They used to be fantastic.

User5747384 · 13/04/2021 15:39

I might spend slightly more at ocado but really I don't think Tesco is cheap these days. I think it's got more expensive than it used to be.

Floralnomad · 13/04/2021 15:44

I use Tesco , pre covid I used to use Ocado but then I couldn’t get a slot and even now I can only get slots at 10/11 pm so I’ve stuck with Tesco . My sister uses Ocado but not weekly she also shops in Marks and Sainsbury so any buts I want from Ocado I get her to get . I think you can shop economically anywhere , it depends what you buy .

ExConstance · 13/04/2021 16:23

One of the main reasons the shop I do at Ocado is so expensive is that they don't seem to stock muc;h own brand or less expensive brand basics. I buy a lot of wh;ite basmati rice, this week t;hey only have Tilda, which is very expensive, a big bag of a brand i've never heard of and ludicrously expensive Daylesford etc. type organic stuff. I ought to leave them, they treated their regular customers very badly during the pandemic. As I w;ork full time and have a regular delivery slot every Friday at 6.30pm I'm still hanging on in there, mainly becuase I'm too lazy to change.
