Fraud/Scam using Pay Pal

PleaseleavePayPal · 03/04/2021 16:01

Dear Paypal users I have had to just cancel my PayPal account because I used a website, PDFSimpli.

It offers to change a PDF file into a word document and it automatically created an account with them which took £54.10 without my knowledge.

It is a scam website that encourages you to upload a pdf, let it convert it to word and when you press download it asks you to sign in using Google or FB and tick a permissions box.

Once you do that you have actually signed up. They create what is called a pre-approved payment account which requires no notification that they will automatically take money from your account.

There nothing showing that you are paying when you download the document. There is no notification from Paypal asking you to verify payment. No receipt sent to your email saying money has been taken. Paypal has refused to refund my money saying that there was 'no unauthorised' use made.

That means this website gave Paypal permission to authorise the taking of money from my account. My permission is not need. £54.10 to sample changing a pdf to a word document. Something that you can do in microsoft word. I was just trying out the website after type 'free pdf converter' into google.

Please think twice before believing PayPal is a safe way of avoiding scams.

This sounds like a You problem not a PayPal problem.

Brahumbug · 03/04/2021 18:44

No, that is a fraud problem and the op has been defrauded.

How can making an account automatically take funds from her paypal? Its not possible.

I have 3 PayPal accounts and had them for over 15 years, I know how PayPal works. She would have had to enter her PayPal email and password for the company to have access to any funds. I can only presume at some point she did this without reading the t&Cs.

This says it all tbh, it wasn't unauthorised as op signed in to PayPal on that website.!

Brahumbug · 03/04/2021 19:50

Push psymentcfraud happens all the time. If this was a bank account rather than paypal she would be refunded.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 03/04/2021 20:45

So op never signed into her PayPal with email and pw on the website?

How does it get your paypal account and password? In your description there doesn't seem to be a step where you give that info

It cant and I dont think op will be back after realising this actually has nothing to do with PayPal.
ForensicAccountant · 05/04/2021 16:43

No, some small print on the website won’t do.

Material conditions need to be the same font and be presented at the same time as the ‘FREE’ offers.

Anything else is misrepresentation and should be challenged.

I think PayPal needs to pay a bit more attention to the law and deal with such scammers.

FredaFox · 05/04/2021 16:48

Agree with other posters, you haven’t been scammed you’ve been naive, you’ve clearly logged in to PayPal with your password for the cash to go through and didn’t read anything the website told you

As an aside you can convert a pdf to word very easily on a laptop, just save your pdf in a folder or on your desktop and right click, hit open with, a list will appear and hit word
