I recieved a letter today stating our claim (we dont recieve tax credits anymore weve moved to uc) has been selected for a check. They have asked for details of social security benefits between 2 dates which i assume is dla which we get for our son, this is fine i can provide details. But what i want to know is why do i need to provide details? Cant they just get the info from dwp?

What details have they requested?

Soontobe60 · 05/04/2021 14:02

I should imagine that due to GDPR they cant just access info from different government departments

LabbyNoona · 05/04/2021 14:02

Can you call HMRC direct? Check it’s not any kind of scam if asking for personal details

EveWasReframed · 05/04/2021 14:03

Hello!

Are you sure it's legitimately from HMRC?

What exactly have you been asked to provide?

I know that HMRC and the DWP talk to each other - they certainly did over my PIP award - so you'd think they'd do exactly that, talk to each other.

Babyroobs · 05/04/2021 14:09

Was anyone claiming carers allowance, ESA, Jsa - these would affect income for tax credits. DLA is not classed as taxable income and they would be able to confirm payment of that with DWP so that you got the child disability element of tax credits.

Tinofcokeforme · 05/04/2021 14:26

Oh @Babyroobs i think thats what it will be, the carers allowance. Also on the letter it says 'The outcome of this enquiry will not affect any other action, including proceedings in a criminal court, which may be taken in your case" is this standard on these sorts of letters?

When you were claiming tax credits were they aware you were claiming carers allowance?

Lots of scams about. Go on the official here site and get their contact number. Do not call the number on the letter. Speak to them using their official number online and ask them about the letter. Do not assume because it looks official its genuine. Always call them to check before you provide details as it leaves you open to identity fraud.
