Hi. Hope this is posted in the right place. I was wondering if anyone can help me with the age child maintenance ceases. My son is hoping to do an apprenticeship after school at 16 and his dad think he can stopping maintenance at that point. Does that sound right? I thought it would be 18 as they have to remain in education until 18 but I think an apprenticeship isn’t classed as education, so he is probably right? Thanks in advance for any help given

Your ex is correct - an apprenticeship isn’t classed as full time education for maintenance purposes.

Your DS will earn the NMW for 16-18 year olds whilst doing his apprenticeship, so it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect him to pay some “keep” to help with household finances.

Your 16 year old will be earning so yes he needs to pay his own way now.
