Tax credit overpayment and leaving the uk

hi, i was overpaid a few yrs ago and allegedly owe £2500. they claimed i was earning too much and needed to pay back some of my payments wheh i feel completely sure i wasnt. i am a supply teacher and did not keep a lot of my payslips and would receive about 5 P60s every yr.

however, i am moving overseas for good next yr and just wondered what the situation would be if i just left the country and did not pay. i know there would be the potential problem of returning to uk to work in future but i know that will not be a possibility. have spent a lot of my life teaching overseas and really can never see myself working here again. i have never been in a position to pay it back as i was single with my kid and am now married but on maternity leave.

would they eventually write off the debt or what?

thanks

This is a payment that they can force you to keep. Do not avoid paying this. You cant get jailed for not paying water etc but you can for this.

Sort it out before you go.
