Tips for remembering MOT date

Does anyone have good tips for how to remember the MOT & tax dates (paper calendar aside), my brain can't take on any more remembering things esp with all the delayed dates and does that change the annual MOT date? All tips appreciated

I do:

Paper calendar reminders 5,4,3 weeks before the date

Also put reminders into my phone

You can sign up for an email alert

You'll get a letter when your car tax is due, so no need to remember. I also get a call from my garage when my MOT is due. I put the date in my phone calender and set it to notify me 2 weeks before it's due.

Set a reminder in your phone calendar and make sure it’s set to alert you. Maybe do it the month before it’s due to expire so you have time to get organised.

Standrewsschool · 11/02/2021 12:01

I write it in my diary a few weeks before due - “ book mot”!

Travellor · 11/02/2021 12:03

Get the DLVA to email you a reminder. www.gov.uk/mot-reminder
If you pay the Car Tax by DD, renewal is automatic, so avoids being untaxed

Who do you get a letter from? I've never had one, is that something you need to sign up for too, I like the email reminder link
RevolutionRadio · 11/02/2021 13:35

I get a text sent to me a month before.

Greendoonan · 11/02/2021 13:37

Put it in your Google calendar along with birthdays and other stuff that happen every year.

I don't have a google calendar, is it compulsory Grin

I've signed up for the email reminder now but would still like to have a double reminder like the letter @Helloguvnor gets

Mouldiwarp1 · 11/02/2021 13:56

As PP said you can sign up for a reminder from DVLA. Up to three cars I think and they remind you a month before.

Tax reminder letters are very hit and miss so I wouldn't rely on always getting one!

You basically can’t live your life without it, you need a Google account to sign into virtually everything!

Marmite27 · 11/02/2021 14:08

I always get a letter about my car tax though the post.

I’ve never not got one. Going back to the days when you needed to take the letter to the post office and got a disc to display in return!

Thank you!!
I'm pretty organised but this is the one thing that slips, even now I was convinced it was December but apparently is 3 months earlier Blush all signed up now

ZarkingBell · 11/02/2021 14:13

Alerts in phone for everything

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/02/2021 14:26

The easy way I remember it, is that it is the same as last year's date but I just add 1 to the year. Wink

Sprig1 · 11/02/2021 14:32

Put the date on a sticker inside your filler cap.

I expect that people with iphones manage perfectly well with the Apple equivalent. Some people might function well with neither.

I have a google account but never use the calendar. I have a spreadsheet with a list of tasks that I need to do every month on payday to keep on top of various financial things. One of the tasks is to check the annual list for anything like MOTs or insurance renewals coming up and action accordingly.

As for the MOT due date, the covid extension was a one off for tests due in a certain period last year. All those cars should now have been MOTd, more or less. Going forward, it's almost certainly a year from the date of last test. But you can get it done up to a month early and still keep the same expiry date. EG if your test was due on 28 Feb 2021 and you had it done today, it would need doing again before 28 Feb 2022.

I don't have a Google calendar or an iPhone yet manage everyday to do my job, bring up my children and generally live my life with no issues and have done for 50 years, pretty sure I'm not doing it wrong but maybe you aren't as good at it as me Grin
