Backdated carers allowance & Tax Credits

I thought I read somewhere that backdated benefits were counted as savings rather than income, but I can't find it? Does anyone know if this is true?

I have had a backdated lump sum from Carers allowance which is quite significant because it's taken so long to process the claim. I'm just not sure whether I need to add it into my income, or whether I can ignore it and just declare the income from payments going forward.
