Self assessment online help

Remmy123 · 05/01/2021 12:17

Hi

I usually do paper self assessments but this year they didnt send me one so I am doing it online.

I obviously have my UTR but when I log in with givenmebt gateway login following the link for self assessments, it takes me to my personal tax page - there is no link or anything to start the self assessment?

I cannot call as they are not taking calls as too busy.

Really confused?

Thanks

You need to request access to self assessment on your personal tax login. There should be an option for "get online access to a tax, duty of scheme" and then you pick self assessment. They'll send you a code in the post that you use to activate it.

Under income where you have the headings Pay As You Earn, Child Benefit, National Insurance etc. Look for the one that says Self Assessment, should be an option there per my post above.

Use this login page - online.hmrc.gov.uk/home - does it show you any different options?

Mine then shows the attached options and as you can see it says Self Assessment and Complete your Tax Return.

If you don't have any luck try the Online Services helpdesk - Helpdesk

Hi,
I have shared your nightmare.
I printed off the copy of self assessment, here is the link
assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/874083/sa100_English_Form.pdf

Don't send in a paper copy, the deadlines are different and the paper filing deadline has long passed.

You don't need to register for self assessment, you have a UTR, you just need to register for online access. The option should be there, if not, give them a call.

TigerDrawers · 05/01/2021 16:49

Try the telephone lines either at the beginning or end of the day. In the middle of the day they're super long queues or just tell you they're too busy and cut you off. Normally in January they're open a bit later in the evening, but do try at either end of the day.

Have you received a notice to complete a tax return? Just wondering whether they've decided that you don't need to do one any more, though they'd normally write to you in that case too.

Ah yes, I forgot about that.😀

I drove myself mad once time trying to access something on the hmrc website and it turned out that because I hadn't clicked to accept cookies I couldn't access the page I wanted. Might be worth checking that you don't have the same problem

Remmy123 · 06/01/2021 21:04

Thanks all - I managed to speak with someone who told me wgat to do, it didnt work.

So I had to log a problem with HMRC - what a pain it's taken me hours 😬

Their tech team is normally pretty good, so hopefully you won't have to wait too long.

In the meantime, be grateful you didn't wait until 31st January to try and do it!!

Remmy123 · 07/01/2021 21:42

Try tech team did not help me - they have sent me a generic email which isn't helpful!!

Basically I can log on but there is no link for self assessment 😡

I'll have to call them again but last time they did t help either 😬
