Marriage allowance when separated

Moominmama79 · 09/12/2020 20:03

I'm separated from my husband and when we were together we were claiming marriage allowance. I wasn't working so my husband got the allowance through his wages. Now we're separated how does it work? Do I need to inform someone that we're not together anymore or is he still entitled to it because we're still married? I don't fully understand how it works so apologies if it's a stupid question.

The government website is a better source of info than Mumsnet!
I expect you mean you’ve decided between yourself to separate, not that you have legally separated.

@Cocomarine thank you for the link! I didn't even think of looking there 🤦‍♀️ I'm not thinking straight lately 😂 We're not legally separated but I think I can still cancel it.

When you cancel it I think it continues until April

It is your personal allowance that you are giving away so you are perfectly entitled to cancel that arrangement. Contact HMRC.

If you intend to get a job then claim back your personal allowance. If not I can't see the advantage of cancelling your current arrangement. But not sure if you still can use this arrangement if you're living in separate houses.
