Can anyone advise....my marriage has broken down and I need to move to rental accommodation with my son. I am a frontline healthcare worker on a low salary working 35 hours a week. To be able to move I think I need to apply for benefits for the first time in my life. However I need to apply for them to enable me to be able to afford to move, then help with housing costs etc. Can I do this before the change happens? I won’t be eligible based on my circumstances now due to my husband’s salary, however he is in huge financial difficulty. and that being said he will not be supporting me in any way when I do manage to move out, at least for the near future. Any advice would be much appreciated!

You can apply if you have separated even if you are still living with him

You can apply if living together but it's not entirely straightforward ! Also if you own half the maritial home they will want to see that efforts are being made to sell the property and divide equity or him buy you out. They will help with rental costs only if reasonable efforts are being made to sell.
