Tipping grocery delivery drivers?

Can I ask why it isn't a done thing to tip grocery delivery drivers but it is for takeaway delivery people? If anything the grocery delivery is far more work than a takeaway delivery.

Is it because grocery delivery drivers are on a fixed salary whereas takeaway delivery drivers are paid per delivery? (Not sure if they are)

Or is it because groceries are a basic essential whereas takeaways are more of a luxury, therefore you wouldn't necessarily expect someone to tip for a delivery of groceries but if you can afford takeaways then clearly you're just being tight if you don't tip?

I've asked around and it seems no one tips their grocery delivery drivers but I'm wondering if this is bad form..

Thoughts?

It’s against company policy for most drivers to accept even if they were offered.

I don’t tip either

It wouldn’t occur to me to tip them or Amazon delivery.. the door bell goes every half hour I’d be skint!Smile

I do at Christmas/NY, not otherwise.

Weekly Ocado deliveries are an integral part of our household functioning so I don’t want to tip. I tip for luxury/add on services for example, but don’t tip the cleaner/nanny other than at Christmas.

I did this before the pandemic. A few drivers would say they'd donate to charity. I wish it was an option to do this via Ocado to be honest.

I asked myself the same. The drivers at hodxpress just leave the groceries at the front door so we don’t even have contact. But I think that it’s like you say, they have a fixed salary whereas takeaway delivery are paid per delivery.

I use to tip takeaway deliveries, but ive stopped since covid cause I thought it wasnt allowed Blush

shivawn · 25/03/2021 21:14

I don't get groceries delivered so never thought about this. I would never not tip a takeaway delivery person though, they are always very grateful for a small tip.

I don't tip anyone.
