Boiler Insurance

Hi we have paid £35 to Corgi every month since 2016.

All the bills are in my husbands name who works away as I cannot work to contribute. I'm autistic and I'm not good with money. Last week I checked if all bills had been paid. I didn't think Corgi had come out so I emailed them to check.

They have said as we have not paid for 3 months they have cancelled our policy and that they have contacted us to see if we would like to renew.

The last I heard from them was 21 July to say our police was ready to renew and it would be done so automatically.

Now I know you cannot just not pay your bills and if I had noticed earlier I would have paid. All our utilities providers obviously have our address but also our email, landline and my mobile as my husband can't always have his phone on.

I open all our bills. (My husband knows this) and we have had no letter to say we were behind.

Corgi also said on their email that now our boiler is faulty we have to pay privately for it to be fixed before they will insure us.

I haven't reported a fault to them. The hot water has ran cold on and off for around 3 months, I kept meaning to claim but just kept resetting it.

I think they are assuming we want to claim
but that wasn't my intention I just wanted our bills up to date.

I can't imagine how much money we have paid over the past 5 years and all for nothing if we have to pay for it to be fixed.

I don't know what I'm asking as I know you will say we should pay our bills but it's an awkward combination of me having autism and my husband not being home.

Can I do anything? I've asked them to tell me how we were contacted but they haven't yet replied.

Thank you.

It sounds like your policy was not renewed when it ran out. Did it definitely say that it would automatically renew, you didn't need to do anything? They won't set up a policy now now as your boiler is faulty and it needs to be in full working order with no faults before you can take out a new insurance policy.

It wasn't all for nothing, it covered your boiler for the previous 5 years.

Hi yes I totally agree.

The email I received in July: Your CORGI HomePlan policy is due to renew on 03/09/2020 and it will renew automatically for another 12 months.

Boiler insurance etc is such a swizz....if you'd put that £35 into a savings account you would have enough to pay a competent local heating engineer....in all the years ive lived on my own ive never had a boiler breakdown.

I'm sick of my boiler insurance with BG. Had it since 2011

Is there a way of having it serviced instead

louise4745 · 11/11/2020 06:59

Hi thanks for the replies.

We are hopeless with money so if we had saved the £35 into another account we would spend it.

I honestly do not think they phoned or wrote to us to let us know. We haven't paid other bills in the past and we have always had a letter.

Might they have emailed your husband if the bill is in his name?

louise4745 · 11/11/2020 07:41

I need to check but I tend to put my email on everything so I can keep on top of things.

When my boiler broke down in lockdown 1 the insurance was a lifesaver as a lot of local trades weren't working.

@woodhill You could use an independent heating engineer and have the boiler serviced every year. I suppose it depends on how old the boiler is, if it's old it might be worth continuing with BG
