I've just paid a cheque into my account today for the first time in years. How long do they take to clear? I bank with NatWest if that makes any difference.

Did it not occur to you to check Natwest's website for a definitive answer? It's a lot quicker than it used to be: supportcentre.natwest.com/olb/payments/pt1a/913211012/How-long-does-it-take-for-a-cheque-to-clear-in-my-account.htm#:~:text=You'll%20normally%20need%20to,will%20usually%20clear%20by%20Tuesday.

Five days normally

earthtopluto · 21/10/2020 15:47

Amazingly my cheques almost always clear within 15 minutes

DoneAdulting · 21/10/2020 15:54

It will clear tomorrow

DadDadDad · 21/10/2020 16:06

@MissMarks - times have moved on - read the link in my post above.

You just reminded me that I needed to pay in a cheque. I did it through the Barclays app and it cleared immediately.

No it never occurred to me. But thanks for the link.

I paid a cheque in yesterday, with NatWest, it had cleared this morning. It was hmrc though so a sure bet for the bank.

redhenry1 · 22/10/2020 09:49

It hasn't cleared today.

Used to take 3 days in person at HSBC but I did one via the app for the first time this year and it went through immediately. it would still be easier if my mum (perfectly IT savvy) would use online banking for my birthday present Grin

FinallyHere · 22/10/2020 10:49

DM used to drive me crackers by insisting on writing me a cheque for my birthday, even when I was the only person operating her account so that a transfer would be so.much.easier

She really didn't understand his much more effort if was for me to find an envelope and a stamp , post it off and then wait.

Then it struck me: I let her write the cheque, shredded it and transferred that amount to my account on line.

I love that you can pay in via online banking apps now, on the rare occasion you get a cheque.

ChessieFL · 22/10/2020 11:00

Depends on the bank Bullshit, not all support that

dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 11:04

In the olden days if you paid a cheque on on Wednesday then it would clear next Tuesday. Things may have changed since then though

dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 11:08

Maybe it will clear by close of business today if it says on their link it will clear today

redhenry1 · 22/10/2020 12:29

It's cleared!

I don't think you can do that with NatWest. It's a great idea though.
