Tax credits overpayment

Hi

My tax credits have now stopped as my childcare costs are only for holiday care now, tax credits said they would not take into account that I have to pay a retainer every week and will only count the holiday weeks. Anyway today I received a letter stating we owe £7000 from 2018 when DH changed job and his earnings were adjusted through PAYE. I did inform them of the change of employer through the online account

It’s a very high amount and obviously can’t pay it off all in a oner so will need to sort out a repayment plan. Any advice? We can’t afford much each month as still need to budget for childcare in the holidays in with all other costs. We can probably only pay around £20 per month.

Are you sure that you actually owe that money in the first place? Did he get paid a lot more when he changed job?

@RedHelenB he did it was quite a jump but we didn’t know figures until it was all adjusted. Unfortunately I think we definitely owe it but it’s going to take an age to pay off as we can’t afford a huge amount per month in repayments

Think £20 a month may be too low but no harm in offering that I suppose. 50 per month would pay it off in 12 years.
