The money, or the goods, have gone somewhere, to another bank, or delivered to an address. Does anyone follow these things up?

Yes, your bank or your credit card company will have a fraud department. If you tell them you are disputing certain amounts that you have been debited, they will approach the retailers for proof that it was you who spent the money. You should get it back, although you might have to jump through a few hoops!

dh lost 5k from his bank. someone somehow accessed his internet banking using our wireless internet connection whilst he was online. ie they must have been sitting outside our house!

he got it back, btw.

Yep I appreciate that I would get it back...but does anything happen to the person that steals it/the goods?

I don't know what happens about delivered goods - I've heard of people waiting outside to catch the courier when the goods are ordered - using someone else's address.

If a bank account is emptied, generally the money goes into an account with the same bank. The person whose account it is, may believe they're doing a legitimate job, accepting charity donations, or legitimate payments, and wiring them overseas (often Russia?). Their account will get closed, obviously, but I'm not sure what else happens.

Here is a useful page on money mules.

Some crook used my FIL's cloned credit card to order himself a big-screen plasma TV. Police were waiting on the doorstep when it was delivered to his house ... Moron.
