Can I recall a direct debit

I have tried to cancel my membership at the gym; telephoned and sent emails. I have no contract it is just a rolling membership,
Pay on the 1st for following month. Today they have taken £70 despite trying to cancel this. Can I call bank and get it back? Could really do with the money, that's why I cancelled

Yes your bank should be able to recall it for you

I cancelled one on line the other day through my on line banking

They may tell you they can't cancel the payment depending on the notice you are required to give in your T&Cs for cancellation, although technically they can. If they refuse tell them you want to do a Direct Debit Indemnity claim as you have already cancelled the instruction.

Don’t know who you bank with but with NatWest you can cancel and recall dd’s on the app on the day it’s taken

I had been trying to cancel online for a couple of days but for some reason this one dd wouldn't cancel, it had a notice saying not set up yet but it obviously was because it has come out today. I tried to cancel for next month and it is still not letting me. I'll ring TSB when they open at 9. Could really do with money back, had to take a pay decrease hence why I was cancelling Sad

You could try under the direct debit guarantee. You've asked them to cancel the membership and they haven't so they've broken the T&Cs by taking payment.

However, it's always worth cancelling a DD for a service you've cancelled, so they can't take the money. Only exception would be if you're expecting a refund for whatever reason, eg credit balance on utility account, because it's easier for them to make the refund if there's a DD in place. But in this case, definitely a good idea to cancel with the bank as well as the gym.

It could be that it's the gym business model, which is to keep taking your money in the hope you won't complain, but also they could have a lot of staff on furlough, so are behind with admin.

Just called the bank and they have recalled and cancelled future direct debits

Hi. Yes, under the terms and conditions of every Direct Debit, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your bank of the amount taken, if it was taken in error.
