What are people's monthly energy bills???

Hi, we've recently noticed we have accrued an £856 in debit energy bill.
2 adults, one pre-scooler and a dog and we live in a 3 bed detatched bungalow and have been paying only £30 per month for both gas and electric! We've been giving our readings and expected it to go up but it hasn't. We've just noticed that we have been being sent the bills (Don't judge, my partner hasn't been checking these apparently😫) and we are in £856 of debit with them over the last 18 months.
This would mean our direct debits should
Have been around £80 per month. I'm just wondering what others energy bills are? Is £80 per month for both gas and electric average? Thanks

Mine is not averaged, I spend roughly £50 pm in summer (this summer. Last summer was £30pm... stupid lockdown) and £80 in winter, for a poorly insulated 3 bed terrace that's quite cold much of the year. I am pretty frugal to achieve this. I'd assume that you have been hugely under paying.

It will probably be racked up to over £100 per month by the way; they will want to have it higher than your average spend to create a buffer, so factor this in to budgeting too. This situation is exactly why I refused to have averaged or estimated bills, I was too scared of an accidental huge bill, I'd be fucked...

We pay £70 a month for gas and electric.4 bed detached. We go into debt over winter cause of heating, but use barely any gas at all in the summer so end up back in credit

Yellowbutterfly1 · 24/07/2020 08:42

Which energy provider are you with?

Go onto Martin Lewis Energy Club on his website and put in exactly how many units you use a year for gas and electric, this should be on your month Bill if you’ve been putting your meter reading in monthly.
There are some good deals but some end today 24th so you need to be quick.

I’m changing from Scottish Power to a special deal on the Martin Lewis energy club website with Octopus Energy.

I Currently pay £93 a month combined with ScottishPower. I put in my meter reading monthly and live in a 3 bed 60’s detached house with an old boiler. I have found we are spending an extra £10 a month in electricity at the moment with Dh working from home and children on iPads all day.

SpideyMom · 24/07/2020 08:59

We are a 1 adult, 1 6year old and 1 dog household and I pay £69 a month. I could pay £56 a month but I much prefer to be in credit as I like to not be worried about using my gas and electricity. Especially when it gets colder.
Even when it was just me I was paying £49 a month for both G&E. We (me and my son) live in a two bed terraced which is wonderful at retaining heat and i've always paid more that £30 a month.

I always thought a provider reviewed your payments to ensure payments are better suited. It's a shame this hasn't happened for you.

Alloverthegrapevine · 24/07/2020 09:02

Blimey DCs' ultra long shower obsession/multiple gadgets are costing more than I realised. We pay £128 pm combined. 4 adults in a 4 bed detached. I actually thought that wasnt too bad.

TimeWastingButFun · 24/07/2020 09:04

£150 pm for electric
£100 pm for oil (roughly)

seven201 · 24/07/2020 09:47

Our is £130 dual fuel for a draughty 3 bed semi. We do have quite a lot of baths and showers. We're on the cheapest deal. And that wish us usually being all out 4 days a week. We're thinking of getting double glazing!

jennymac31 · 24/07/2020 23:05

Had been paying £80pm dual fuel for 3 bed house (2 adults, 1 child and 1 toddler) but recently managed to reduce payments to £70pm.

Hoppinggreen · 24/07/2020 23:16

£105 pm for both
Modern 4 bed house

InTheCludgie · 25/07/2020 09:58

I think I need to get on to Uswitch or similar, pp's with 4 bed homes are paying less for dual fuel than I am (2 bed mid terrace, £123 a month)

SpideyMom · 25/07/2020 10:44

I really rate Avro Energy. I went direct after comparison sites suggested they were one of the best options for me but I wasn't able to switch via the comparison site.
When it came to renew last year most providers wanted a min £25 more a month than I was paying which one, I couldn't afford, and two, didn't make sense as I was in so much credit. Anyway Avro Energy matched what I was paying and it was based on increased readings rather than my actual. Ive been with them since September and have been able to change to a better/cheaper tariff twice. I hope their pricing stays this way as I cant see me moving

Catspaw123 · 25/07/2020 10:46

85 per month gas electricity new build 3 bed detached

mencken · 25/07/2020 11:19

completely irrelevant what others pay. Guessing you've ignored all the info on the bills that says 'you could be paying less' and are on an expensive standard tariff.

arse in gear - and yours too. Run a comparison and check UNIT PRICES and STANDING CHARGE, not the total bill. You will obviously have to clear the debt, and certainly before you can switch.

the maths isn't too difficult but you need to do a bit of work.

if you want to post unit costs, standing charges and annual use on here we can advise on what they should be. And if you do that you'll only be the second one ever that I can recall, most on MN run away when you use the word 'maths'.

JorisBonson · 25/07/2020 11:29

£80 a month for both, 2 bed mid terrace, 2 adults and 3 cats. Leccy is sky high at the moment because DP is at home but this still covers it.

jennymac31 · 25/07/2020 17:12

I had switched to AVRO Energy last year and had assumed I would switch again when looking at price comparison sites but they were able to reduce my monthly bills for the same consumption so I decided to stay with them.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/07/2020 10:09

The average for all consumers is around £100 pm. Obviously what people actually pay will vary enormously, but your situation does seem fairly middle of the road in terms of house and family size, so you would expect to be paying close to the average amount.

Which energy provider is this? They've been seriously amiss to allow such a large debt to build up and set your payment at a level that experience will tell them is too low for almost everyone, except perhaps someone who lives in a small, well insulated property and is away from home a lot.

Ireolu · 26/07/2020 20:20

We use octopus energy. Really intuitive stuff. We get an email a month to put in our readings. We get told immediately if there is debt and it can be paid online. Our Direct debit is 82/month. No waiting around for a mammoth bill at the end. We would recommend. 3 bed 30s semi. 2 adults and a small child.

dementedpixie · 26/07/2020 20:23

I'm also with Octopus. They ask for a monthly reading and once submitted they send you an updated balance and exactly how much you have spent on gas/electric.

ChasingRainbows19 · 26/07/2020 20:24

£70 duel a month. This covers us all year with surplus in summer which covers for winter. 3 bed semi with two of us. Heating on October-April ish. But not high or all the time. Ovo, smart meter and a nest thermostat too.

dementedpixie · 26/07/2020 20:26

An example of what octopus sends once readings are submitted

What are people's monthly energy bills???
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/07/2020 20:28

Just signed up to octopus- their rates were so good compared to all the others I checked

dementedpixie · 26/07/2020 20:30

did you go through someone's link as you could have got £50 off your bill plus they would get £50 off their bill too?

I can post mine if anyone is interested

Rebelwithallthecause · 26/07/2020 20:41

2 bed old end of terrace - £120 a month

Too much in my opinion considering we aren’t at home all the time and put in all eco bulbs, new boiler and new windows and doors.

notacooldad · 26/07/2020 20:46

We pay £44 a month for gas and electricity.
Theres 3 adults who live here and another adult that pops in for a shower several times a week.( and spends for ever in there!!😂)

orangegerbil · 26/07/2020 21:05

£65 every month - consumption will be less in summer and more in winter so £65 is average. Two adults in two bed semi who are out most of the day.

£30 is way too low - that would probably be about right for a single person in a studio flat, and even then would need to be using things sparingly.
