K4455 · 24/07/2020 06:59

Hi, we've recently noticed we have accrued an £856 in debit energy bill.
2 adults, one pre-scooler and a dog and we live in a 3 bed detatched bungalow and have been paying only £30 per month for both gas and electric! We've been giving our readings and expected it to go up but it hasn't. We've just noticed that we have been being sent the bills (Don't judge, my partner hasn't been checking these apparently😫) and we are in £856 of debit with them over the last 18 months.
This would mean our direct debits should
Have been around £80 per month. I'm just wondering what others energy bills are? Is £80 per month for both gas and electric average? Thanks

Approx £50pm electric plus oil which averages about £40pm. 4 bed newish house with 1 adult and 2 teens.

£30 seems very low.

purpleme12 · 24/07/2020 07:11

£50 something pounds. But it's just me and child. So yes £30 doesn't seem right at all!

Mumofcats5 · 24/07/2020 07:14

We pay £80 a month - 3 bed end of terrace Victorian home with 2 adults wfh and toddler. It probably should be more around £70 but we like to build a buffer.

relievedlady · 24/07/2020 07:15

£30 a month for gas in the summer and £90 a month electric.

Three bed end terrace. Two adults a teen and a tween b

£30 is far too low. I would have queries that early on op.

Spend my life battling to get ours lower Shock

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 24/07/2020 07:15

£70pm dual fuel, 3 bed semi, 2 adults 2 kids

Mintjulia · 24/07/2020 07:16

4 bed older house, 1 adult, 1 teen.

All gas & electric last year came to £1200, so £100 a month.

TeddyIsaHe · 24/07/2020 07:18

2 bed 2 bath terrace. I pay £70 a month for gas & electricity all year round and currently £350 in credit.

bluefoxmug · 24/07/2020 07:18

30 is way too low.
when we were in a 3 bed with 2 adults and 2 children we paid around 120 a month gas & elec. we chose a more expensive green energy company though.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/07/2020 07:18

£90 a month, gas and electric, average 3 bed detached, home most days as retired and switch supplier each year. £30 is very low.

dementedpixie · 24/07/2020 07:18

Last month my usage was around £30 gas and £70 electric. £30 is far too low

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/07/2020 07:20

And £80 sounds a reasonable amount as your OP

Peasbewithyou · 24/07/2020 07:20

Wow, ours is astronomical! My direct debit is £221 per month for both gas and electric (I am currently shopping around for a new deal as this seems ridiculous).

dementedpixie · 24/07/2020 07:21

The energy supplier should have increased your direct debit but you could also have asked for the amount to increase. Which energy supplier?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/07/2020 07:21

If you have been giving readings then your provider can only bill you for the last year. Do push for this, mine said I didn’t qualify and when I wanted to escalate it to ofgem they said I did qualify- shocking Hmm

Anyway £30 is ridiculously low- c.£80-£110 a month for a family of 3 in a terrace house south east

WisestIsShe · 24/07/2020 07:21

£99 a month. Three bed semi but I work from home so much more heating etc in the winter.

K4455 · 24/07/2020 07:22

Thanks everyone. Yes the £30 is very low and we've naively been waiting for them to up it as we send our readings monthly.
Our new amount will be around £80 which reading your comments is more realistic. Thanks

Ours are over the year average £40 a month gas and electric, two adults in a two bedroomed flat.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 24/07/2020 07:25

Pay £65 per month but in the summer have been using slightly less than £40. In the winter we use around £95 on average.

Skyliner001 · 24/07/2020 07:27

We are off grid for gas so have LPG. Approx £90 / month. 20 for electricity. Your bill was hugely low, so the debit on the account sounds right. A bit of a shock 😱

MrsPworkingmummy · 24/07/2020 07:27

We live in a 6 bed, 3 story end of terraced (Victorian) on a dual fuel deal with Eon paying £124 per month. I'll shop around when our deal ends in October as I've not been happy with their service. Prior to living here, we lived in a 300 year old 5 bed stone built farmhouse and paid around £250 per month on average. I do think what you've been paying sounds incredibly low and it's no suprise you're in debt. Have you now phoned them to increase the direct debit amount?

dementedpixie · 24/07/2020 07:29

if your provider has an app you can often change your direct debit yourself through that. Or you can phone or email them to change it.

sanityisamyth · 24/07/2020 07:29

£129 a month. One adult, one 6 year old. 2 bed mid floor flat.

Was originally £58 a month but npower more than doubled it when I put the electric heaters on. Average use is £50 a month according to smart meter. Now £200 in credit!!

K4455 · 24/07/2020 07:30

Thank you I work part time so I'm home a lot too.
