Does it cost to get your car looked at by a mechanic?

My car has a squealing noise when driving at low speeds, I think it might be that the break pads need replacing. If you take it to a garage to have it looked at and a quote, do you usually pay for this or would you just pay for the work that needs doing when you get it done?

Thanks

Depends - Most would be pretty decent and take a quick look, with the understanding you would use them to do the work.

if it goes on the ramps it may be £20 or so?

Hi OP - I own a small independent garage. We wouldn’t charge for this, but it’s always worth confirming first, as some places will.

if you are able-bodied you can have a look yourself, thin brake pads should be visible. It's a basic check.

it isn't an expensive job anyway, but if that is the problem get it done quick before the disks get damaged.
