Goodwill letter for credit

Just wondering if anyone has ever had any luck with removing defaults on their credit report. I have an £11 mobile phone bill that is showing settled but was defaulted due to me being in hospital over stroke for a few months. By the time I was out of hospital my card had expired for dd payment and the bill wasn't settled. I then noticed after they had sent several letters when I got home. I settled it but it's now showing default. I am now almost back to good health, got a job and wanted to buy my first home but the default is a problem. Do good will letters work? Not sure what else to do here.

The companies need to report the true and factual report to the credit agencies however if you have prove that you were in the hospital at that time, etc, I feel they should be able to look into it. Like it’s worth trying
DD payments normally come out of your account and it uses your a/c no and sort code so your card expiring wouldn’t matter.

Not sure why payment was stopped but a payment didn't go through. £11 is what is causing me a mortgage with low interest. I earn an average salary and there's no way I will intentionally default on £11. After my stroke it took me a while to get back to some kind of normal which am still not there yet but baby steps. I will send a letter out, I guess worse they can do is say no.
