What happens if I don't get my tax return in by the 30th

It says if I want them to calculate my tax I have to have it by then - but what happens if I don't - surely they'll still ask me for the tax? ie work it out for me?
I'm struggling for time as I have a couple of vat returns to do for clients first.

If you do it online it will be calculated automatically anyway.

If you do the paper version they might calculate it for you, if they don't there is a helpsheet that will allow you to calculate it yourself (using the numbers on your self assessment form).

You have until end of Januray to actually pay

i.e as long as it has been calculated somehow and paid by end of January thats all they care about.
