Viewing Wills

Does anyone know if you make a purchase to view a will on the government website, does the family, executors or anyone get notified or is it completely untraceable?

I don't believe anyone gets notified as it's technically a public document!

Racoonworld · 22/06/2020 16:46

@Dinosauraddict thanks I was hoping that was the case

It's a public document, they won't snitch on you.

I got sick of the arched eyebrow and hinting from someone I know who had "a significant sum" left in trust. I think it cost me all of £1.50 for a copy of the will and it also had the valuation of the estate with it. Painless and very good value for money.

Completely public documents - will take around 39 days, sometimes longer to get a will but very simple to do. But remember that not all estates go through probate and have a will accessible via the Probate Office website

Does this apply in Scotland too? And is it just for people who have already died, or all all wills registered somewhere?

I suspect Scotland is the same. Not sure where you look though. But in answer to your second question, nope wills are only made public after probate is granted. So the will of someone living won’t be published until after their death, while they live the details of their will is their own private business.
