How long till I know if my bank account application was successful?

I applied last Wednesday for a bank account online with Santander.
They didn't give me a yes or no decision,they just asked me to upload my driving licence and a letter with my name and address on.
Today I received a letter from them with my online banking details letter 1 of 2.
I haven't received a debit card or pin or even a welcome letter.
Would you assume they've opened me an account ?

The rest of the stuff will get sent out over the next few days.

I would assume so. When you get letter 2 of 2, you can log in to the online banking and see your account number.

I expect you will also get the card and pin letters before too long. The post has been weird lately because of corona and lots of things get delayed.

Are banks letting people open accounts? A friend told me this morning she had tried to open one and was told they are not accepting applications for new accounts due to covid. I admit I did find that very strange.

I can't see why not but I only tried Santander
