Will universal credit pay for your rent if you are moving to a different Borough?

Hi,

I'm going through a divorce and found a DSS approved rental property. Someone just told me that universal credit will not pay for me as I haven't lived in the borough I am moving to for more than 3 months. Is this correct?

Thank you.

I think it used to be the case with housing benefit that the council didn't have to pay if you relocated to the area and didn't have any links to the area. I've no idea how that works with universal credit. Maybe it's different as it isn't paid by the council, whereas housing benefit was.

You could try the CAB UC helpline for advice:

As for as I'm aware, UC is not concerned with how long you have lived at the property and borough. You just need a proper rental agreement to show them.
