Marriage allowance and tax

Hoping someone can shed some light.

I recently heard about marriage allowance, we aren't entitled to it for the last two years but I thought we might be for the two years after we got married. I couldn't remember my exact salary so thought id apply and see.

Husband received a cheque a few days later with and amount for those two years... Happy days.

However, I came home yesterday to two letters from HMRC - one stating husband had overpaid tax by xx amount and I under paid tax by the same amount and they would collect it from my wages over a 12 month period.

My question... I am due to go on Maternity in the next 3 weeks and wont be earning enough to qualify to pay tax, will i still be charged the repayments? or can i just return the cheque and tell them to forget about it?

Thanks :)

each tax year is treated in isolation
you owe what you owe for those years
sorry
