To ask what Appen is?

I've just come accross the £10 a day thread and have seen lots of you sharing how much you've earned through the likes of Appen.

I'm just wondering what it actually is/involves? I'd like to earn a bit of money on the side so would be interested in doing this if it is legit and not tooo time consuming. Also, how do you apply/ do you have to meet any requirements to apply?

Thank you in advance :)

Appen is a crowdsourcing site. It offers micro tasks, and long term projects. You can end up doing anything from recording voice samples to develop Google/Alexa type products, evaluate how accurate search results are on Pinterest, it's really varied. That said, there can be a long wait to secure a project or task.

If you're interested I'd also look at Lionbridge and isoftstone, they offer similar work.

You'll need a CV for Appen (highly doubt they read it!) and that's pretty much it. Some projects occasionally require something like being within a certain age bracket, or living in a specific region, but you don't need anything special to work for them.

I hope that's helpful. Please hop onto the thread if you need any support, I know it can be a bit intimidating Smile

Oh. And in terms of time, it depends. Some projects are an hour a day, others 25 hours a week, some are just as and when work comes in. So just don't apply for something that won't fit in with what you need it to.

@otterses brilliant thank you, will take a look at both and see if I can figure them out :)

@otterses - any experience with clickworker - I had a look at the jobs there and there seems to be a lot of "take 5 selfies per day" or do a survey but provide your twitter handle - which seems bizarre

Anyone else baffled by Appen? I signed up yesterday - two different passwords and logins so I had two emails in my inbox to verify for an Appen Platform Account and an Appen Contributor Portal Account. Today I try to login to see if any work and it tells me "there is no account registered on this website with the email address you entered".

I imagine that if I tried to re-register they may well tell me that that email is currently in use even while telling me they have no record of it. Ha ha. Shall I even dare or shall I believe the reviews and move on to another company?

How much could you expect to earn from a 20 hour a week project roughly? I[m a freelancer and it keeps popping up for me on LinkedIn but I can[t decide if it´s worth my while to go through all the faff of a payoneer account and so on.

Would you have to declare any income to HMRC? Just curious as I signed up ages ago and am getting their emails but never actually attempted anything. I’m currently employed through PAYE

Cailleachian · 09/09/2022 19:13

If your income from Appen is under £1k per annum, you might be able to apply for traders exemption for tax purposes, but yes you should do a self-assessment.

I've worked for them, pay rate is low, work is mind-numbing, but I used it as a suppliment for freelancing when things were quiet to top up my income. Not really something reliable, but handy, easy, and fairly immediate payment.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 09/09/2022 19:37

When you say low, what are you talking about? How much would you earn for instance from a twenty hour a week project?

Cailleachian · 10/09/2022 14:59

I cant honestly remember, but I think it was offically around £10 per hour. It was a few years ago tho. I did task based work, and 1h of work would take me around 80 mins, so headline rate didnt always match the actual.
