Come and join us if you want a simple no spend month

The aim is to just spend on supermarket shop & fuel (Direct debits first bills)

No spending on anything else till February. The idea being it gives your purse & bank balance a rest after December & take stock of mindless spending

Just coming up to 9 am and I haven't spent anything yet :)

2020cominatcha · 01/01/2020 08:59

Placemarking - also haven’t spent anything Wink

savethecat · 01/01/2020 12:20

We are having our Xmas day lunch, come NYD lunch, today. I have been pretty good using what I managed to get before Xmas and have lots of free booze via wine for xmas. We have no sprouts so I am using cabbage rather than dashing out to buy some. The kids don't seem to mind.

patchworkelephant123 · 01/01/2020 12:28

I've found my people! I've put some of DC Christmas presents away, sticker books and activities to bring it one at a time at the weekends to play with. This will hopefully remove the risk of us going mad and spending money going out as there's things to do at home!

Weekday28 · 01/01/2020 12:33

I'll happily join. I have 3 children but hoping we can make it through

mildlymiffed · 01/01/2020 12:42

Hey hey! My people I think too! Although I'm moving house this month so I will have some spend. But I have a storage unit full of stuff so need to get sorting and selling!

I've put the Yolt app on my phone. And need to cancel some direct debits.

Keepmewarm · 01/01/2020 15:16

Checking in!

Thefaceofboe · 01/01/2020 15:19

Me too! But I do have £250 of vouchers to spend in next and John Lewis so that will keep me going Grin

mummyof4kids · 01/01/2020 15:22

Can I join please?
Determined to save money this year and not spend money on things I don't need.
So far today I've had to spend taxi fare to and from work as there's no buses and I'm taking my own food to work instead of buying it at work.
Looking forward to checking in with you all

Gonewiththemadness · 01/01/2020 15:31

Yes please!
I am so sure I can do this except one thing.... can we spend on travel?
I don’t drive so no fuel costs but we do use public transport for getting about if it’s further out than our own town.
I spent last year sorting allot of debt and am almost debt free coming into this year but now I need to focus on saving!
01/01/2020 - council tax DD paid, Cat plan DDs for our cats paid, extra spend... £0! Grin hope to keep it this way all month!

ptumbi · 01/01/2020 15:40

What do you spend on, if it's not food and fuel? (and Bills)

I don't spend on much else than that - no coffees (other than maybe out with friends once a month), clothes are charity shop, don't buy stuff for the house unless I need it. No makeup, no skincare other than a moisturiser on offer when I need it.

I spend on holidays - a week away later in the year and a couple of weekends away possibly - and 5 members of family have birthdays in the next 2 months, so that will cost. But apart from these, I don't spend.

Kezo · 01/01/2020 15:49

I have already planned to get the weekly shop delivered each week and spend nothing else (apart from bills of course).

No take aways, local shop trips or online shopping rabbit holes for me this month!

I'm glad there is a thread on this, hopefully seeing others progress will help me not to break and buy random crap I don't need.

I have small debts to pay off and have already wrote down in a notebook which ones will be paid first/how much and when. So I am getting there! I'm hoping to end the year with no debt and a buffer of £1,000 in my bank.

ivykaty44 · 01/01/2020 15:58

Ok day one... no spend
I’m also going to try cycle when light & dry, just cycled to family for lunch & coffee with Christmas cake 6:6 miles. Fortunately it’s mostly cycle path, alongside major rds or quiet back roads
I’m going to use the car when it’s dark or raining, or walk. It’ll reduce fuel use & it’s rather nice getting some fresh air. I walk to work most of the time.

Indeed travel/fuel costs excluded from the no spend 😊

sayingno · 01/01/2020 16:03

I'm joining, even though I have bought a water bottle off Amazon for the gym.

Also, I'm aiming less waste and a bit of weight loss so no spend helps with:
No takeaways
No plastic
No clothes
Etc

savethecat · 01/01/2020 16:28

@ptumbi it's more food outside of the once a week, to a budget grocery ship.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 01/01/2020 16:29

I'm in! Though we went for a free day out at the seaside today but had to pay for parking?! Does that count?

ivykaty44 · 01/01/2020 16:38

Parking costs count, everywhere has free parking somewhere 🤣

Joining in! I've got to stop the mindless spending because I'm bored, stressed or upset. buying stuff doesn't make me happier, I just end up with clutter I need to get rid of which ends up annoying me!

no spending today as sorting out and tidying up. but tomorrow will spend as once a month we meet friends for a club and have a McDonalds. will take food for me and drinks for the girls, we won't spend in shops. should be around £10 - £6 bus fare and have some burger/chips £1.99 vouchers and I'm sure I've filled up a free tea card now.

Gonewiththemadness · 01/01/2020 17:13

Fantastic!
Pretty excited about this. I’m also going to try to raise some extra money (aside from normal income) through January where possible too. I put things on olio and Freecycle often but we have allot of very good condition clothes that have been outgrown and some other bits and pieces too that I may list on gumtree. Smile

MrsWombat · 01/01/2020 17:44

Yes please!

I would say that today is a no-spend day, but I donated £1 on entry to a charity event today, which was good value for money for the entertainment we received. We bought our hot drinks in travel mugs and snacks too. I cracked open the emergency UHT milk so I won't have to go to the shops until I need to do a big shop.

Also earned £10. (See £10 a day thread)

ivykaty44 · 01/01/2020 17:48

I’m sat compling a food plan & sorting meals that I can use left over from Christmas & store cupboard.

I don’t just want to purchase food when I can use what is already in the fridge

I’ve come up with
realfood.tesco.com/recipes/rigatoni-and-cauliflower-cheese-with-mascarpone.html Use up mascarpone & cauliflower
www.happyveggiekitchen.com/tomato-mascarpone-one-pot-pasta/ Use up the remainder of mascarpone

www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/pasta-with-sweetcorn-ricotta-and-basil/ Use up ricotta

I also have the ingredients to make a chickpea curry with rice

So I’m hoping my supermarket shop will come in very low this week

MrsWombat - excellent day! The £10 per day thread is looking great 👍🏻

OP posts:
savethecat · 01/01/2020 18:01

I dont understand the £10 a day thread at all.

Keepmewarm · 01/01/2020 19:09

We have planned to eat everything in the cupboards and freezer even if it means slightly odd meals.
