January no spend thread

ivykaty44 · 01/01/2020 08:31

Come and join us if you want a simple no spend month

The aim is to just spend on supermarket shop & fuel (Direct debits first bills)

No spending on anything else till February. The idea being it gives your purse & bank balance a rest after December & take stock of mindless spending

When my D.C. were younger doing extra curriculum activities, I had worked out how much it all cost per month, including one of annual circuit fees. Then I put that money into the bills account every payday.

Then just used the bills account to pay - this stopped January & September being expensive months ( most annual fees were needed then) and I jyst treated it like another bill.

Good idea. I do account for the money when budgeting but should move it to a separate account.

torthecatlady · 11/01/2020 18:37

Had to go to the supermarket to pick up some extras (as expected), took a small list and stuck to it, no extras added. Came to £12.

Went to Newlook and bought a new blazer that I needed for work and an upcoming funeral. It was on sale reduced from £30 to £11 and should get a fair amount of wear. Not really an impulse buy as I've needed one for a while.

However, I did managed to resist stopping at Costa which I count as a win Grin

Ok so I’m back on track today & have been cooking a lovely roast dinner. Not now going for a coffee and am having a no spend day

Anyone else having a no spend day?

OP posts:
torthecatlady · 12/01/2020 16:00

Yep no spend day here too Smile I've had a busy day of cooking and lots of (long overdue) vacuuming today.

savethecat · 12/01/2020 18:38

I went to a 50% off shoe sale.
Tried on some lovely animal print boots.

And walked away (not in the boots) :)

Keepmewarm · 12/01/2020 20:08

No spend day here.
A day reading snuggled up with my dog. Ds has been out on his bike and dh has been packing for a work trip.

PH30B3 · 13/01/2020 08:36

I have £30 drawn out for the week.
Treated husband yesterday with £40 so would like it to be as low as possible to balance out this week.
Overall its not going too bad.

mildlymiffed · 13/01/2020 08:46

@savethecat you must have enormous resolve! Hats off to you. I am doing well on non-essentials, but house move has led to some big ticket items. But casual spending on food/drinks/snacks has been curtailed!

savethecat · 13/01/2020 10:01

There were pretty cute too. It felt odd to walk out of the store with nothing.

Bluewavescrashing · 13/01/2020 11:08

Had a big birthday to celebrate in the family this weekend so back to a no send day today.

I don't plan to do a food shop this week as we have loads in the cupboard and freezer.

Bluewavescrashing · 13/01/2020 11:09

Well done @savethecat 👍

torthecatlady · 15/01/2020 19:07

No spend day today, plus I opened one of our loose change money pots this evening which had £140 in it which will go straight on the credit cards Smile

Keepmewarm · 15/01/2020 21:45

I’ve missed a few days but all no spends.

Elbeagle · 16/01/2020 09:22

Still getting into the swing of things here but doing quite well. Have had a few complete no spend days and my spends have just been due to lack of planning/organisation, which I am rectifying, and have all been on necessities such as dog food.

torthecatlady · 16/01/2020 21:48

Not a no spend day today... but managed to save some money.

I had a hair cut and conditioning treatment and my gel nails removed which came to £23. My friend is a mobile beautician and hairdresser so it's a good chance to catch up and cheaper than going to a salon. Plus she painted my nails for free using one of my own nail polishes. However, I waxed my own eyebrows so saved £5! I have a pretty low maintenance beauty regime, but still need to look smart for work.

Dh and I had an "orange reward" each on our Nandos cards, so got dinner for free and took home to eat. Also picked up a free McDonald's milkshake each on the way home with the McDonald's app (there's a daily offer each day of January and today was a free milkshake, no purchase necessary).

Tomorrow will be a no spend day.

Keepmewarm · 16/01/2020 21:50

Another no spend day but need to get a yoga mat tomorrow as I’m ruining my knees.

MrsWombat · 16/01/2020 21:57

I had a Starbucks today as a payday treat with a Lidl almond croissant. I often end up with rubbish pub or leisure centre coffees so it was nice to purposely go there and enjoy a well earned treat. That’s my splurge over and done with now back to more no spend days.

ZimZamZoom · 17/01/2020 10:52

I've been following this thread with interest. I also need to seriously curtail my unnecessary spending (books, clothes, nail varnishes, fancy coffees Blush) as we are hoping to move house in 2021 and I'm permanently in my overdraft.
I have been really good and not spent on anything other than the usual direct debits since 9th Jan. I've done one supermarket shop, which involved a strict meal plan/list and I stuck to it!
I've been in low level debt for most of my adult life and this year somehow feels different to me, like I can actually be free of debt and even maybe have a small cushion of emergency money in my savings account.
Good luck to us all Smile

savethecat · 17/01/2020 12:41

I bought a £2.75 tshirt from the charity shop this morninh! It wasa DC retro batman and my son would love it . Damn.

ivykaty44 · 17/01/2020 14:08

So I’ve been good all week, supermarket shopping on Sunday and haven’t spent since
But today I’ve been to savers and stocked up on shampoo x2 shower cream x 3, toothpaste x 4 & deodorant x 2 hand soap gel x2 also got more loo roll 18 pack and it was £16 so 14 items for £16

Toothpaste was 69p instead of £1.50 in supermarket that’s why I got 4 😛

But it’ll last a while and cheaper than supermarket

Of to London tomorrow as a treat we’re having afternoon tea but that’s all paid for and the train. So we’ve got a free walking tour planned and the British museum - probably spend on a coffee and croissant though

savethecat · 17/01/2020 14:09

ivykaty44 · 17/01/2020 17:08

Thanks - I plan to 😊
There are many free attractions in London, meaning low spends
