what would you guys think if you were given a cubic zirconia engagement ring?

If I liked the style of it, I'd be very happy. I don't know much about precious stones so I'd probably think it was a diamond.

catsredshoes · 28/12/2019 22:14

@funmummy48 - I agree. however I was given a CZ and was delighted with it (whether it was real or not didn't enter my head, I didn't care) then someone pointed out it wasn't a diamond and after that a few people nastily commented that it wasn't a real diamond and that bothered me, I dont know why it just did.

I love mine.
I chose it with DP and it means the world. I'm not materialistic in any way and if he had done the whole traditional thing of X weeks wages to buy a diamond, I'd have gone scranny no doubt!!
It looks like a diamond, it feels.like a diamond and the meaning that comes with it, is worth more than any diamond.

2020BetterBeBetter · 28/12/2019 22:25

How did they know it wasn’t real? Even some jewellers need to examine the stones carefully (and sometimes weigh them) to determine whether they are genuine diamonds or CZ.

Weenurse · 28/12/2019 22:29

Be proud you are not part of the population that uses child labor in diamond mines simply to brag it is a real diamond.
Well done
Also saves money to be spent on your lives together

CooCooCoo · 28/12/2019 22:30

Would bother me a bit tbh

CooCooCoo · 28/12/2019 22:30

*Wouldn’t

Obsidian77 · 28/12/2019 22:31

If you know it's cubic zirconia, are fine with that and especially if you choose it then great. Looks about the same.

WisestIsShe · 28/12/2019 22:32

I'd be happy if I liked the style. Diamonds are just so so much money which might be practically spent elsewhere, like saving for a house deposit. I guess it depends how much disposable income you have.

Pixilicious · 28/12/2019 22:33

Sorry to go against the general consensus but I would not be happy

Weffiepops · 28/12/2019 22:40

My ex gave me a cz ring but pretended it was a diamond. I was young and believed him. Took it to the jewellers for a clean and found out the truth. Felt a fool, I loved the ring but I wished he'd been honest. He's now an x

Lanaa · 28/12/2019 22:41

There would be no engagement.

Bojangles33 · 28/12/2019 22:49

if YOU are happy with it then that's all that matters and regardless of what your engagement ring is it is very rude of anyone to make negative comments about it!!!! I know lots of people go for something other than a diamond these days and if they like it and it's in their budget that's all that should matter

MrsApplepants · 28/12/2019 22:51

I wouldn’t wear a cz ring but if you like it and aren’t trying to pass it off as the real thing, that’s all that matters.

Womenwotlunch · 28/12/2019 23:02

I am not materialistic, but I wouldn’t be happy tbh

AdoraBell · 28/12/2019 23:03

Personally I wouldn’t like a CZ ring for engagement, but if you like it and aren’t bothered about the value then got for it and enjoy it. They have improved greatly in the last twenty or so years. I work in a jewellers and one of my colleagues wears a CZ ring. Most customers assume it’s a diamond.

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 28/12/2019 23:19

As long as I liked the style of the ring, I wouldn't be bothered in the slightest.

To those saying that they'd be bothered, why? Just because it's not a real diamond? Because it's 'cheap'?

doublebarrellednurse · 28/12/2019 23:19

I'd be happy that my partner didn't buy into the diamond trade. Truly ethical diamonds are very very hard to come by.

Horehound · 28/12/2019 23:22

I wouldn't be happy with that

GrumpyHoonMain · 28/12/2019 23:34

I am Indian and know a lot of jewellers - CZ or ‘American Diamond’ rings with a lot of gold (or diamonds and gold bought seperately) are often considered better value long term because diamonds can’t be resold easily unless they are certified by specific jewellers / diamond merchants.

ArnoldBee · 28/12/2019 23:41

CZ is pretty and has a beauty of it's own. If you like the ring then that's all that matters. I had a second hand wedding ring bought for every day wear as I.like to get my hands dirty and not worry about ruining an expensive ring. My friend cried when she lost her diamond in the bath!

earsup · 28/12/2019 23:46

Unless you can afford a high grade real diamond...of which there are very few and do cost tens of thousands....then why not a cz...many of the russian made ones are identical to a real diamond and the diamond mafia industry blocks imports of them to keep the prices artificially hire of the real ones.

Charlottejbt · 29/12/2019 00:33

They say moissanite is better quality and more durable than CZ. I wouldn't personally insist on a diamond, unless it was secondhand.

LightDrizzle · 29/12/2019 00:37

I wouldn’t want CZ as an engagement riing as it isn’t durable. It scratches easily and won’t last.
However if you are okay with that, and he was upfront about it being a CZ, then fuck other people. I do think it’s important that he told you it wasn’t a diamond.

LightDrizzle · 29/12/2019 00:41

earsup a well cut CZ may look identical to a diamond to most people, but it doesn’t behave like one and is not at all durable. I believe Moissanite is much more durable than CZ, but still a lot less durable than diamond (the MOHS scale is not linear).
