Maternity Pay

I am currently stressed about my job, working in Finance. Dealing with new people in my team losing my current manager, I feel like I am the team's fortress at the moment.
I've been wanting to leave and find a new job until I found out that I was pregnant with baby#2. At 18 weeks pregnant, I believe it would be impractical to leave my work.

In April, I will be on maternity leave which will only give me an SMP of less than half of my current monthly pay. That's not even enough to cover my share of our household expenses.

Aside from that, I send £250 to my mother back home as she depends on me alone.

To this, I plan to hand my notice at work probably 5 months after the baby is born and get a new job while I'm on maternity leave.

Has any other mums done this? I will be having a csection but think that 5 months should be enough to heal.

Also, can the company make me pay back any amount for not returning to work and? Thanks

Also, can the company make me pay back any amount for not returning to work - depends if they pay you more than Statutory Maternity Pay. If they dont pay extra you dont repay anything. If they do pay extra it will say in your contract whether you need to pay it back
