A big thank you to to @reddA for compiling the list below :) and thanks to @Otterses for all the hard work, keeping these threads going.

There aren't rules, as long as you've made some extra cash. So from eBay to remote jobs to saving money by switching your house insurance provider - it all counts.

Please don't discuss any clients on the thread or ask for extra information that may compromise Non Disclosure Agreements.

Yes. HMRC currently have an entrepreneurs allowance of £1000 per tax year. Once you go over that you will need to register for SA. We are currently in the 2019/20 tax year so the electronic return would be due by 31 Jan 2021 along with any tax due. I would advise you register as soon as you go over the £1000.

I work full time and will register as soon as I go over the £1000. I will also submit my tax return just after the end of the tax year (5 April) as soon as I get the P60 from my main job probs in May.

You can look at the Self Employment pages on the gov.uk website.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 19/09/2019 10:19

Ah ok thank you so much Wolfff I'll read up on it

Wolfff · 19/09/2019 11:34

There are other options for payment such as coding in the tax you will owe into your PAYE earnings if you apply by a certain time, but personally I will be putting a percentage aside each month and paying it in one go online as less hassle.

rhij86 · 19/09/2019 13:07

So I've just applied for Appen and I got this message... does this mean they don't want me? Or that they're reviewing my app and will contact me if they do?

I'm pretty sure it's a standard message. They normally contact you quite quickly. I got contacted in a couple of hours but it may be a day or two depending on their applications on hand I guess.

However being accepted is no guarantee of long term work. There are quite a few people who do a small project to start and then are offered nothing for months if at all.

rhij86 · 19/09/2019 13:44

@Wolfff - thank you! I've gathered from the posts on here that the work can be pretty sporadic at best - just wanted to be sure I hadn't be automatically declined for some reason before I'd even started!

Thanks again :)

0hmygoodness · 19/09/2019 16:11

@justtheonethen I have been added to the rating tool for nile today and have done my first batch (was all ready for a long delay!!) so you should be up and running soon too if you aren't already.

Softstone have also OK'd my trial recordings so more of those to do later too.

Big thank you to @Otterses for starting these threads and everyone who contributes, it really has made a difference to my income.

3dogsnorth · 19/09/2019 16:45

I did the trial utterances for softstone this morning. Not heard back yet. Hope the Scottish accent is ok!

Otterses · 19/09/2019 17:13

@0hmygoodness Grin I'm glad the thread even took off! I have you lot t thank, you really spur me on to keep going. It's really uplifting seeing so many of you getting opportunities you deserve (at last!)

Sorry I've been a bit quiet as of late Sad I've been given an exceptionally depressing women focused project and not really been in an amazing mindset to be posting. The world for so many women seems so bleak to me at the moment. Quite relieved I have a couple of days off next week to recharge/Crisp/check out these exciting blogs being posted on here!

Wolfff · 19/09/2019 18:07

Serious thanks are due from me. I don’t know what I would have done without this thread and the very generous Otterses and other posters. I have a reasonable full time job, but two kids at Uni and needed extra to support my Mum as my stepfather is in a care home which takes all their income. He is dying now, so it won’t be for ever. But I have stopped getting into serious debt and a negative balance each month and all the worry that brought.

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 19/09/2019 18:23

Yes, I am very grateful to this thread.
I had to give up work a couple of years ago as it was too much for my Autistic son.
Also too much for Autistic me!

Anyway I am working (very) part time at the moment so the extra cash and things to fill the days are a godsend to me.

justtheonethen · 19/09/2019 18:33

@0hmygoodness I got added today too and did my first batch but I need to slow down as it only took 45 mins and that was with me consciously trying to slow down.

I can't shout loud enough about how brilliant this thread has been @Otterses - it's meant I don't have to go back to work and can be with my toddler, and I've saved for IVF and we are off on a spur of the moment holiday next weekSmile

For anyone wondering about the shifts on Crisp they are brilliant, well worth getting on, it's made it really easy to make my daily target irrespective of how much content. It's hard though, I suppose just because it's all new to me so hope it becomes more intuitive soon.

bkaz · 19/09/2019 18:41

@TheLolaMontez do you have to upload your picture before you get a job from Respondent?

BlackCatFan · 19/09/2019 18:54

I just came on to ask about Crisp shifts.. @justtheonethen did you ask about them or were you offered the shifts? I'm thinking about emailing just to express my interest.. After my new job not working out I'm unemployed at the moment. 😥 so I'm doing Crisp "full" time until I find something. Appen would be good too but I haven't heard anything from them.
The run up to Christmas is a good time, I'm hoping to pick up some temp work.

rhij86 · 19/09/2019 18:59

Can I ask, for those using respondent, what 'relevant industries' you've put in your profiles to get the job matches you're getting?

WheelyCote · 19/09/2019 19:23

Another shout out to you otterses....really greatful for the thread....i had that break up and household income dropped....the project ive picked up is a blessing and hope to be starting another soon....with any luck ill back about another too...

justtheonethen · 19/09/2019 19:29

@bkaz no! I haven't!

justtheonethen · 19/09/2019 19:29

@BlackCatFan they emailed me but no harm in emailing them- I think you have to have been working 3+ months

@justtheonethen - Thank you.
@Otterseas and others, thank you for this thread.

TheLolaMontez · 19/09/2019 20:29

@bkaz to be honest I'm not sure. I've applied for so much stuff I can barely remember what's what! However, if they ask for one it's likely I will have uploaded one.

Otterses · 19/09/2019 20:55

@Wolfff

Apologies if I mentioned this to you before, but have you made sure you're claiming FNC for your stepdads care? I think it's £150 odd a week.

I didn't realise when I was sorting my nans finances out, we ended up with a couple of grand refunded to us by the home she was in.

I'm sure you're more in the ball than I was though Grin

And I'm so sorry to hear that he's taken a bit of a turn for the worst Sad money really is the last thing you want to be thinking about in times like this.

justtheonethen · 19/09/2019 21:29

@whatthewhatthewhat I don't know, I won't just in case. It's not more than I would make in a decent hour though, just guaranteed.

Wolfff · 19/09/2019 21:33

Thanks @Otterses unfortunately he has dementia and doesn't qualify. He partly self funds and the LA tops it up. He paid extra into the state pension and not private, so they take most of it, leaving my Mum with very little.

We have been over her finances with the social worker and the LA but they won't reduce the fee portion. We prefer her to have a newish car on a lease as she is in her 80s and lives rurally with no reliable public transport, so her overheads are quite high.

Although me and DH earn above average, we have 2 kids at Uni on the minimum maintenance loan and MIL also needs financial support.

Thanks for your kind comments. Sadly at this point, I think death is a release for him horrible as that sounds. He seems to be suffering greatly.

Anyway, I appreciate the support on this thread, it has made a great difference, thank you.

bkaz · 20/09/2019 07:05

@TheLolaMonte - Thanks, I saw a survey and it was asking me to complete my profile and the only thing I did not do was upload my picture. I will give that one a miss then.
