Wages being withheld

Firstly this is not a begging thread. I have family who can lend me money if needed and I am not going to starve to death!

I have just returned to work from 9 months maternity leave and my manager didn't fill in a form to payroll to inform them of my return. I did fill in a form to say I was taking 9 months before I went off. But that's irrelevant. My manager didn't inform them, so I got no wages.

Rang Payroll on pay day and got my manager to fill in the form and next working day I got some money in my account. All fine. But it's only 2/3 of gross wage as they hold some back to pay tax, NI, etc. I reckon I'm about £150 down, but could be more. Definitely not less.

I've tried to argue that I want this money. It's summer holidays, I need every penny I can get!! And I've just finished mat leave so I have a bit of credit card that I planned to pay with this wage.

They won't give me the money until next pay day (or even tell me how much I'm short so I could lend it from someone and pay them back next month without being short then). They say it's their policy and that's it.

Surely I'm entitled to the rest of my wages?? There must be something they can do?? Is this normal, it doesn't seem right to me??

Have you been given a payslip?
It doesnt sound right at all, it sounds as though they have given you an advance on your salary, which means it hasn't gone through payroll yet.
I'm not sure there's much you can do once payroll is run but I would e asking your manager to sort it out for you if they messed it up.

What they have done is perfectly normal. Your wages will go through properly next month and you will get any difference. If they have given you 2/3 of your gross pay then it may not be that far out.

@Todaythiscouldbe yes they mentioned an advance. I'd forgotten that was the word they used.

@CrispbuttyNo1 it's not a million miles away, but it's about £150. Not a massive amount in the grand scheme of things, but I'm still about £150 down this month, and I could have done with that money. Yes I'll get it next month, but to me that doesn't seem the point.

Most companies would withold 30% for tax and NI in the event of an advance - that's what PAYE and NI comes to approximately. How much were you supposed to receive?

QforCucumber · 02/08/2019 14:06

They can't pay you the gross amount though, as if they did they'd have to deduct the tax and NI owed in next months pay - and this would make you even worse off next month
