@TheLolaMontez I also received the email today from Appen Connect, just have to keep our fingers crossed that we will get paid.

I did a job on Appen Global but can't seem to withdraw it as I believe the minimum is $40, so quite annoyed at this.

pisspants · 14/08/2019 19:39

@Givemestrengthorgin are you doing fletcher Wink
I gave up half way through as realised what they said was 3-4 hours work was more like double that. I did it with a deadline of the following day and have been paid nothing for it. I reckon they hope they'll get enough data without having to pay out as so many people must give up!

WheelyCote · 14/08/2019 20:04

Ive been paid!!!!
Its over 500 pound!!!
Thank you so much to this thread!!!

Im not sure what to do about tax though....need to register as self employed. I have a full time day job so suspect i need to pay tax. I was going to take 250 for home and put 250 in a savings account whilst i figure out how much tax i need to pay and when...

What does everyone else do??

bananamuffin99 · 14/08/2019 20:19

@WheelyCote woah that is amazing! Was it from crisp??

Heismyopendoor · 14/08/2019 21:53

Signed up to Rev this evening and got accepted, have done a few bits, i'm so slow at it though lol!

Also interested in signing up for Palfish, i've a lot of experience with kids so hoping that could work out well :)

Zebrimid · 14/08/2019 22:09

Also interested in signing up for Palfish, i've a lot of experience with kids so hoping that could work out well smile

For the interview part (not technically an interview you just record a video going through the slides pretending it's a lesson and it gets reviewed later).
For the kids course interview it gets reviewed by the company in China, some things there really big on, which they will look for in the video.
Really hype up the body language, like cup the ear when your waiting on the "child" to respond. Point to your mouth when you're wanting them to repeat. Can you see the monkey? Dramatic eye point and monkey imitation.

pretend they've made mistakes (it's weird doing this with no one actually there while you are recording). No, monkey, monnnnnnkey, repeat monkey! Yes good job, you get a star!!!!! Wait for responses even though there's no one there! Hello my name is Zebrimid, what's your name? (pause) hello Steven! How are you (pause) etc!

No "incidental language" instead of, first were going to look at this slide to see if we can find the monkey. Instead, can you(dramatic point at screen) find (pretend your looking) the monkey? (hold up picture of monkey or pretend to be one)

Stick some cuddly toys or educational posters in the background.

Use the filters! They have Snapchat type filters you use in the lesson, most kids I've taught seem to hate them, they're a faff to click onto in a lesson, but they look for that in your interview clip also give out stars to your pretend pupil in the lesson.

Zebrimid · 14/08/2019 22:19

Being cheeky but my referal code/invitational code as they call it to palfish is 57897100 if anyone wants to sign up and I get some cash off palfish for you joining! WinkGrin

seizethecuttlefish · 15/08/2019 08:43

@Zebrimid I'll definitely use it. As soon as I figure out TEFL! No idea which one to do.

Zebrimid · 15/08/2019 09:22

Get the cheapest one you can complete online via Groupon or similar. They don't care at all which one you have, it's just because Chinese law requires foreign teachers to have one so they're just box ticking.
I had a TEFL from years ago but couldn't find the certificate so I got a TESOL one on Groupon and quickly just did the quizzes and got the certificate!

pisspants · 15/08/2019 09:30

@Zebrimid how does palfish compare to cambly? Am finding the flexibility good with Cambly but the hourly pay is not brilliant especially as you have gaps in the hours - I think I am averaging about $7 an hour so far. Do you have to commit to hours with palfish and do you get a lot of sessions?

whatthewhatthewhat · 15/08/2019 14:34

Anyone know Appen's global pay dates? Wondering how optimistic I should be for tomorrow?

whatthewhatthewhat · 15/08/2019 14:39

Grr! Just realised they pay on Thursdays, so probably next week :-(

Heismyopendoor · 15/08/2019 15:28

Zebrimid what should I look to pay for the course? Butting in here if you don’t mind :)

tinkywinkyshandbag · 15/08/2019 22:18

I emailed Lionbridge and they are looking for social media evaluators in the UK and the pay is quite good, $14 an hour and a minimum of 5-7 hours a week. However as part of the T's and C's you basically agree that all the information on your social media is available to the researchers, and it will be personally identifiable to you. I just feel a bit uncomfortable about this. So not sure whether to go for it or not.

Visioncroquet · 16/08/2019 09:49

Hi all. Just after a bit of advice. I signed up to angelfish and applied for a home visit from the BBC with my son about watching TV. Just received a text from angelfish saying they have one appointment left if I, want it.. Could do with the money but now I'm a little worried, how legit is angelfish? Anyone has an home interview like this. Thanks

bananamuffin99 · 16/08/2019 10:09

I have my assessment today with cloudworkers, hoping I don't muck it up as the money is to be put aside in my deposit fund.

DontCallMeDarling · 16/08/2019 10:17

Good luck!

SNISR · 16/08/2019 10:24

Hi everyone. May I join your group too?

I've been reading the posts and really interested in making some extra cash. I'm a house wife at the moment until I find a decent term time only job as my husbands shifts have changed and the only job that will suit me is a school job so I can work around the kids.

Anyway, I joined Appen a few months ago and on the innari-C project which is really good. I did get an email today saying I'm rushing through the posts and need to slow down lol.

I like Qmee. Making about £30 every fortnight. I'm constantly refreshing.

Prolific was fab until a few weeks ago... may be it's slow due to summer hols?

I want to join palfish, is it easy to get onto and what qualifications do we need?

I passed the Crispy test yesterday after my 6th attempt Grin

SNISR · 16/08/2019 10:29

Also, what qualifications do you need for Palfish? Do I need a degree?

Zebrimid · 16/08/2019 11:32

Sorry for the late response.

So here is my very long palfish/cambly explanation, a pre-warning, my typing is terrible at the moment as I have a wrist brace on and can't use my fingers properly and it's a pain to go back to correct! I'm normally much better at English!!

Palfish Kids Pay
55yuan (£6.43) per 25minute class
You get paid by payoneer once a month, once you hit the threshold of
As you take on more lessons each month, your pay goes up slightly. The highest level people earn: $10.9 (75 yuan)per 25 minute lesson.

Palfish Adults pay
I don't teach the adults so I can't give as indepth but basically you set you only pay of X amount of yuan per minute. If you teach adults, you will have to price low, to begin with until you build up enough reputation that you can start charging higher prices.

Palfish Kids Classes
To begin with Palfish book you in for some trial lessons (you can choose what times you are available). You teach the trial slides to potential customers, you get paid the standard 55yuan, but if they end up buying a course you get a bonus.
After a while palfish will stop sending trial lessons your way as the expectation is you will of converted some of your trial lessons into regular students.
Things to do to win students, do live lessons, there's the option of doing live lessons on the app, you can charge or do them for free, it's a good way of bringing in potential clients.
You can make sure to have you app open between the hours of 8am - roughly 1pm uk time, this is peak beijing time and you will notice pop ups appearing saying emergency teacher needed, this is where a teacher hasn't turned up and you're going to be the substitute, smash the lesson and try and convert them

Palfish things you need
A mobile or tablet, you teach the lesson on your phone or tablet, not a computer.

Some props, this does not have to cost you anything, I'm happy to share my prop files, I just use print outs of a monkey, fruit etc, if you don't have a printer, draw some of the things you will need in the trial lessons.

A tefl, tesol or similar certificate, do not spend loads of money on this, this is a box-ticking exercise that all Chinese companies have to do now, unless this is going to be your life long career, get the cheapest one you can find.

A blue shirt. I have a cheap blue polo that I throw on top of my actual clothes before I do a lesson.

Technically it says you need a degree or to be studying for a degree, however, there are lots of teachers on the app that don't, if you do well on your trial lesson I don't think they care as long as you have a tefl or tesol. Basically they only care that you are a native speaker and that you can ham it up in lessons.

Cambly pay
Cambly: 0.17 (usd) cents per minute, if you are fully booked this equals $10.20 an hour, pay is paid every Monday (once you are over the 20 dollar threshold) to paypal.

Cambly things you need
A computer, a webcam, a mic for your computer.

Getting Classes Cambly
Some negatives around that, at the beginning, it's hard to get booked in the slots you want at the beginning, you have no rating and no experience. The way to get around this is to jump on priority hours.

Priority hours on Cambly are hour-long slots where you guarantee you will pick up calls, for every hour, you get a 5-minute break that you can choose whenever you would like. So they route people towards you that haven't booked in.

Pros Priority hour
At the beginning realistically priority hours are the only way to make money, it helps build up your rating, you get to talk to lots of people who could book in with you as a regular tutor. You still get paid the same but its Adam at 1pm for 30 mins rather than mystery callers for the priority hour.
It's guaranteed cash, you will probably get at least one or two decent sized calls.

Neg priority hour
You have no idea who is coming in! It could be someone who's basically fluent and wants help with their IELTS practise or it could be someone who speaks no English, be prepared to adapt!
You could be sitting and only take one 15minute call. Or you could be sitting, and you take none if you take none you get a tiny amount I think like 3 dollars. Taking none hasn't happened to me yet, I've always had at least one or two calls.

If you don't get calls for the whole hour, that's a lot of sitting around to do when your not earning money, what I do is I watch Netflix on another screen or do things like Appen, so I am earning while I am sitting around.

Really try and smash these priority calls as if they like you, they will book in with you again, if you have regulars at set hours, then you don't have to faff around sitting about on priority hours.

If people want to take a peek at the palfish app/cambly app from the tutors point a view I'm happy to jump on a screen sharing app or zoom etc and show the various slides you will have to teach, how priority hours work on cambly, how to teach them. It's really the least I could do, I've really struggled in the work place due to asd and discovering this thread and learning so much has a) got me earning cash! but b) given me so much confidence that I can make money at home, in the way that I want to, if you'd told me a year ago I would be talking to randomers online on cambly I would of laughed, I was so shy. I can't explain how much confidence, ideas etc this thread has given me, so I am more than happy to return the favour and help others with the couple of bits I know!

Zebrimid · 16/08/2019 11:39

Tips for cambly

Have an a4 sheet of prompt questions so when you get someone who isn't speaking much, you have some fallback questions, do you like to travel, whats your favourite food etc.
Read up on the IELTS and look at the questions that get asked on the IELTS. Lots of people are studying for that and will ask for help with that
so if you have a web page open with a list of questions it makes life easier.

Be prepared to talk about yourself if the person won't talk at all, I've had that more then once this week. So I live in Scotland, in the countryside, not a town, so lots of trees and animals , you get the idea.

In settings there's an option to turn off the cameras of people who are doing 15 minute trials, do this!!! When you've talked for a minute and they respond to your hey how are you, whats your name etc, then turn the camera back on so you can see them, if they're grunting or being weird :/ keep it off and exit the call. Often people who have the free 15 minute trial are people pranking or being inappropriate, people on the subscription plan are there to learn, so don't worry about that.

Another thing! Cambly has a kids course that pays double, I've just joined up to it so I can't tell you much about it yet as I don't know, but basically when you join cambly, email them from the support page and say your interested in the kids course

Zebrimid · 16/08/2019 11:48

Tips for palfish

Feel free to expand beyond the slides, say if the slide has apple, orange and pear on, if the child is doing well, talk about bananas, watermelon etc. If you teach new words, the parents are more likely to book in with you. Afterwards you have to fill in a review of the child, you can just click the stars for the various things, Pronouncation: 3 stars and it autofills it in for you, but for trial lessons I always quickly write my own, I think it makes the parents more likely to buy more classes with you.
I also message them afterwards with a picture of something we learnt in class and me saying the word for them to practise with.
Little touches like that in the trial classes I think really help.

Be prepared to act like an idiot, I've had kids walk away mid lesson as they're really too young to be learning off a random person from the uk on a phone! Do whatever you can to get them back, as palfish sometimes review the lessons, don't sit waiting for the parent to get them back as they might not even be in the room.

I had this last week and I started singing, pretending to be a monkey, showing a cuddly toy I had, just act like a childrens presentator who has had wayyyy too much sugar, that's basically what you are, your presenting the slides really not so much teaching.

Use the filters and stars especially in trial lessons but also your interview lesson. This will be confusing but once you have the app it will make sense, theres like a snapchat style filter thing, that enables you to put a monkey/banana/rabbit/various animals and fruit mask on you and the child, use it, palfish really drill that in to use the filters often.
If the child does something good, you can award the star, try and get to the maximum 5 stars by the end of the lesson.

This is all very rambly and doesn't make so much sense without the context of the app,so as I said happy to screen share etc to show both cambly and palfish off.

Zebrimid · 16/08/2019 11:49

bananamuffin9 when did you apply for cloudworkers? I still haven't heard back

pisspants · 16/08/2019 12:29

@zebrimid thank you for your replies, great to hear your experience. Although the pay is not as good I think I will stick to cambly for the time being as I find it much easier to just chat to adults. I have been earning a decent amount off there (am on €60 since Monday so far with 3 evenings worked) and like that it is a weekly payment with no commitment. I need to up my game with things prepared for people with very low English though. I had a very painful half hour with someone last night where she couldn't really talk or understand me. I taught her body parts! was all I had available!!!!

SNISR · 16/08/2019 12:50

@Zebrimid thank you sooooo much for your tips! They really helped a lot. Thank you for all the time and effort you have put in to write the post for us.

I will be booking a cheap TEFL course today. I think the cheapest I've seen is £19.99 from a quick google search. I have so many spare hours during the day which I could be using on palfish to earn a little extra cash every month.
